April 6, 2023
Wednesday saw the release of the latest film based on a classic video game when The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit theaters. The movie opened in 4,025 locations and bumps up to a solid 4,343 cinemas starting Friday. The adventure film starring Chris Pratt as the beloved Italian plumber-turned-hero nabbed an impressive $31.7 million on its opening day in North America, while taking in $34.7 million overseas. Joining Pratt in the Universal Pictures feature is Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black voicing the role of Bowser.
Joining The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a mid-week opener, AIR made its leap into theaters with $3.29 million from 3,507 locations on Wednesday, and will keep that count throughout the weekend. The film, which includes an impressive collection of top Hollywood talent reveals the unbelievable game-changing partnership between a then rookie Michael Jordan and Nike’s fledgling basketball shoe division which revolutionized the world of sports and contemporary culture with the Air Jordan brand.
Making its way into 819 venues this week is Paint. The movie stars Owen Wilson as Vermont’s number one public television painter who finds his success threatened by a new, younger artist.
Rounding out the top five widest releases this week are last week’s box office juggernauts Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and John Wick: Chapter 4. The former diced up over $37 million in its opening weekend, and currently enjoys a six-day total of $45.48 million. The film adds one theater this week for a total count of 3,856 locations. The latter drops 248 venues this week, but is still widely available in 3,607 theaters. Lastly, Scream VI will be playing in 2,286 movie houses.
Looking ahead to next week we see six films aiming to make it into wide release. Two of these newcomers come from Sony Pictures in the way of Suzume, and The Pope’s Exorcist. Suzume is projected to arrive in 2,000 locations, while The Pope’s Exorcist looks to release in about 3,000 theaters. Also making their big screen debuts next week are Mafia Mamma, Nefarious, Renfield, and Sweetwater. Given the films already doing well, it’ll be a real battle for screens next weekend.
