Prediction update: Creed shooting for $50 million, Demon Slayer eyes $10 million

Creed III

This morning’s updated weekend predictions starts out with a mea culpa. I accidentally left Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba—To the Swordsmith Village off our predictions yesterday. My apologies for that. I’ve included our original prediction and our Saturday-morning revision in this column. There’s also an update for Creed III, which had an excellent day on Friday and is looking at a weekend around $50 million.

First up, here’s our model’s original prediction for Demon Slayer:

The big question with this prediction was whether to compare it only to last year’s Demon Slayer release, Mugen Train, or to compare it to all recent Crunchyroll/FUNimation releases. I opted for the latter, which looks like a good decision in hindsight but I should acknowledge it was something of a coin flip decision. For the record, our model would have predicted $19.4 million based solely on the performance of Mugen Train

With Friday’s numbers in, here’s what that model now predicts for the top 10 this weekend…

Creed III is coming in well ahead of Friday’s prediction, and at the upper end of what I thought was possible. Ant-Man is continuing its steep decline, and Operation Fortune is doing about as well as its tepid Thursday preview numbers suggested.

Demon Slayer, meanwhile, is going to post around $11 million, and should finish the weekend in third place overall.
