Weekend Wrap-Up: Wretched is a Legitimate Hit
May 26, 2020
It was Memorial Day long weekend this past weekend, not that this really mattered when it comes to the box office chart. Until the pandemic is no longer a serious concern, holidays won’t have a significant impact at the box office. That said, The Wretched is doing well enough to be considered a legitimate hit, even under normal circumstances.
This past weekend, it pulled in $216,000 in 59 theaters for a running tally of $579,000 after just four weeks of release. Not only is this film doing really well, it is inspiring other distributors to release similar films in the hope of getting in on the action. For example, Saban Films released We Summon the Darkness on VOD more than a month ago, but gave the film a release in 10 drive-in theaters this past weekend, and earned $30,000 (nearly all of which came from Friday screenings).
On the other hand, we’ve also learned pretty definitely what films don’t work in drive-ins, as The Trip to Greece only managed $1,110 in three theaters. This is barely more than How to Build a Girl earned during its third week of release. Comedies and dramas don’t seem to have the same appeal in drive-ins as horror films.
