Streaming Releases: New Releases Remain Intact
May 9, 2020
There is a trio of documentaries on this week’s list, including Becoming, which is the best of the three. I’m most interested in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend, while I think Solar Opposites will find the widest audience.
Movies:
Becoming - Reviews
Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics - Reviews
Spaceship Earth - Reviews
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend - Reviews
TV Shows:
Dead to Me: Season Two - Reviews
The Eddy - Reviews
Solar Opposites: Season One - Reviews
Netflix
A documentary about Michelle Obama. The film’s reviews are excellent, but this will clearly appeal to one side of the political aisle more than the other.
Netflix
It appears the makers of this documentary put stunt-casting ahead of making a compelling movie.
Hulu
A documentary about Biosphere 2, which was designed to be an experiment with a group of people living in an isolated self-contained replica of Earth’s environment to show the viability of space colonization. The media circus surrounding the experiment overtook the experiment itself, so it is a fascinating subject matter for a documentary.
Netflix
This is a border case between being a movie and a TV show, as it is a TV movie based on a TV series that recently ended. The original show was a critical darling, but this is an interactive experience, so I’m not sure how well that gimmick will work. I am still interested in seeing it, but I’m keeping expectations in check, as I don’t think the movie will live up to the full series.
Netflix
Christina Applegate plays a recent widow who is determined to figure out who killed her husband in a hit-and-run. She meets and befriends Linda Cardellini, but this woman has a secret. The first season earned great reviews and season two is earning earning even better ones. Granted, it also has far fewer reviews, but that’s common for TV shows and this season should please most fans.
Netflix
A show set in a Parisian night club. The reviews are good, but not great, although some of this could be due to high expectations.
Hulu
The cartoon is about a family of aliens who are refugees in middle America after their planet was destroyed. It was co-created by one of the co-creators of Rick & Morty and that should get a lot of people excited. Also, it has 96% positive reviews with an average review score of 8 out of 10, which is get even more people excited.
