International Box Office: Star Wars Keeps Competition Away from Top Spot

January 15, 2020

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

As previously reported, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker entered the billion dollar club on Tuesday. Over the weekend, it earned $24.2 million in 55 markets for totals, as of the end of the weekend, of $511.4 million internationally and $989.6 million worldwide. It struggled in South Korea, earning second place with $2.16 million on 948 screens over the three-day weekend for a total opening of $3.09 million. I’ll talk about the film that beat it below. Rise of Skywalker did relatively better in the Philippines with an opening of $1.0 million over the weekend, and $3.0 million including previews.

1917 landed in second place with $22.4 million over the weekend for an early international total of $23.8 million. Unsurprisingly, the U.K. led the way with $9.72 million in 683 theaters.

Jumanji: The Next Level was in a close second place with $22.30 million on 10,488 in 83 markets for totals of $413.53 million internationally and $670.66 million worldwide. The film’s only new market of the weekend was Argentina, where it earned second place with $1.19 million on 495 screens. It has yet to open in Brazil, its last international market, and while it won’t match its predecessor, it has already made enough to earn a substantial profit.

Frozen II slipped to fourth place with $19.1 million in 53 markets for totals of $912.0 million internationally and $1.371 billion worldwide. The film climbed ahead of Black Panther and into 11th place on the all-time worldwide chart. Furthermore, it should have the legs to top Age of Ultron and enter the top ten.

Spies in Disguise managed fifth place with $11.4 million in 40 markets over the weekend for totals of $60.4 million internationally and $115.0 million worldwide. This includes a second place debut in Russia, where it earned $3.29 million on 1,567 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.45 million in that market.

Dolittle opened outside of the top five, but it did earn $8.3 million in four markets during its international debut. This includes a first place opening in South Korea, topping The Rise of Skywalker with $5.36 million on 1,290 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.83 million in that market. This is a good start, but I don’t expect it to last, not with poor reviews holding it back.
