International Box Office: Star Wars Still Strong, Frozen and Jumanji Practically Tie for Second

January 8, 2020

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker added $50.5 million in 53 markets to its totals, which now sit at $468.0 million internationally and $918.8 million worldwide. The film will hit $1 billion, likely by the end of the weekend, especially if it is a big hit when it opens in its last two markets, South Korea and the Philippines. While the film won’t match initial expectations, it will be fantastically profitable.

Frozen II earned second place, barely, with $42.4 million in 55 markets for totals of $875.3 million internationally and $1.325 billion worldwide. It became the highest grossing animated film of all time, because Disney doesn’t consider The Lion King an animated film. This past weekend, Frozen II earned record-openings in Brazil ($10.3 million); Argentina ($1.9 million); and Bolivia ($0.6 million). All three of those openings represent new highs for Disney Animation.

Jumanji: The Next Level was right behind with $42.26 million on 14,030 screens in 82 markets for totals of $375.38 million internationally and $611.31 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did hold strong in the U.K. down just 16% to $4.02 million on 893 screens over the weekend for a total of $37.40 million after four weeks of release. The film also held well in Australia down 41% during its sophomore stint earning $5.42 million on 324 screens over the weekend for an early total of $19.78 million. The film opens in Brazil shortly, which will be its final major market. It will get to $400 million internationally before then and has a slim shot at $500 million, given its legs so far.

Tolo Tolo had a monster record-breaking opening in its native Italy earning $23.58 million over the weekend for a five-day opening of $33.49 million. To put this into perspective, Avengers: Endgame earned $34 million in that market, in total.

Adoring earned first place in its native China and fifth place internationally with $17.93 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $63.70 million.
