Friday Estimates: Frozen II in the Black on Black Friday
November 30, 2019
Frozen II remains on pace to top expectations and set a couple of Thanksgiving weekend records. It should earn both the three-day and the five-day records. In fact, with a Friday haul of $34.03 million, it is on pace for about $85 million from Friday through Sunday, meaning its three-day Thanksgiving weekend won’t be too far behind the first Frozen’s five-day Thanksgiving weekend haul of $93.59 million. Even with weaker legs thanks to weaker reviews, a lower A minus CinemaScore, and being a sequel, it is still on pace to top its predecessor and hit $400 million domestically with ease.
Knives Out is also smashing through expectations with $10.69 million on Friday giving a total of $25.39 million after just three days of release. This isn’t too far behind our $28 million five-day prediction, which was actually above average given the range of pre-release predictions out there. The film’s reviews and its A minus from CinemaScore are already having an effect on the film’s legs, which should be long enough to get the movie to $100 million domestically. This is an excellent result for a film that cost $40 million to make and it will earn a sizable profit for Lionsgate.
Ford v Ferrari retook third place with $5.42 million on Friday for a running tally of $73.20 million after 15 days of release. The film is projected to earn close to $14 million over the three-day weekend and almost $20 million over five. It should remain at least semi-wide through to the new year, meaning it will have no trouble topping $100 million and it will likely break even during its initial push into the home market.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was right behind with $5.0 million on Friday and $27.5 million after eight days of release. It will likely finish Thanksgiving with just over $12 million / just under $18 million over the weekend and $35 million so far. It should also remain in more than 1,000 theaters for over a month, especially if its reviews turn into major awards buzz, meaning $100 million isn’t out of the question, assuming it is a serious Oscar contender.
Queen and Slim is also topping expectations with a Friday box office of $4.31 million giving it $8.42 million after just three days of release. The film’s reviews and its A minus from CinemaScore are obviously helping its box office numbers and it will earn more over three days, just over $10 million, than most thought it would earn over five.
