Weekend Wrap-Up: Hobbs and Shaw Stumble Out of the Gate
August 7, 2019
It was a mixed weekend at the box office with Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw missing lofty expectations by a huge margin and this left the box office 8.4% lower than last weekend at $149 million. More importantly, this was 6.9% higher than the same weekend last year. 2019 closed the gap between it and last year a little bit and it is now down by 6.2% or $460 million at $6.96 billion to $7.42 billion. Unfortunately, we really needed a much faster start from Hobbs and Shaw to have a good month, so this might be as good as it gets until September.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw had the lowest opening in the Fast and the Furious franchise since Tokyo Drift came out more than a decade ago. Additionally, its $60.04 million opening is terrible for a film that cost $200 million to make and even with solid reviews and an A minus from CinemaScore, it will have a difficult time at the domestic box office. On the other hand, it is already a much bigger hit internationally and it could break even just on its performance outside of the domestic market.
The Lion King plummeted 60% last weekend, but it bounced back this weekend. Unfortunately, “bouncing back” in this case still means a 50% decline to $38.5 million. Fortunately, this is still a huge amount for a family film to earn during its third weekend of release and the movie is going to be massively profitable in the end.
Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood came within a rounding error of expectations with $20.01 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $78.83 million. It will get to $100 million domestically, perhaps as early as this time next week, but it was a very expensive movie to make, so it will need to find a receptive audience internationally and on the home market to break even any time soon.
Spider-Man: Far From Home grabbed fourth place with $7.90 million over the weekend for a total of $360.48 million after a month of release. This is already a significant improvement on the first film and it isn’t done at the box office.
Toy Story 4 was right behind with $7.35 million over the weekend giving it a running tally of $410.25 million after seven weeks of release. It will soon become a $1 billion hit worldwide, so this is a fantastic run.
