International Box Office: Toy Story Still has Stories to Tell
June 27, 2019
Toy Story 4 dominated the international chart with $120.0 million in 37 markets, representing 64% of the international marketplace. Interestingly, China wasn’t the film’s biggest market, as it had an absolute monster debut in Mexico taking top spot there with $23.82 million. The film also dominated the chart in the U.K. with $16.90 million, which isn’t as strong as its opening here, but still impressive. Likewise, the film managed $13.4 million in China, which is good for an animated film there. Good, but not great. The film broke the record for an opening by an animated film in Brazil with $9.6 million and did nearly as well in neighboring Argentina with $7.5 million. It was also impressive in South Korea with $7.47 million on 1,335 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.55 million.
Aladdin remained in second place for the third weekend in a row with $32.9 million in 55 markets over the weekend for totals of $522.6 million internationally and $811.1 million worldwide. This film’s legs have been amazing and $900 million worldwide is now likely.
Men in Black: International held on better than expected internationally slipping to a close third place with $30.57 million on 22,654 screens in 83 markets for totals of $129.73 million internationally and $182.38 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Indonesia where it earned first place with $2.99 million on 874 screens during its five-day opening. Its biggest market overall is China where it earned $5.86 million on 7,283 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $42.46 million. The official budget for the movie is $110 million, so it isn’t too far away from paying for that globally and it could get there before its theatrical run is over. That still leaves its advertising budget to pay for, but it does have the benefit of boosted sales for other films in the franchise, so it could break even synergistically.
Spirited Away opened in first place in China with $27.85 million over the weekend for a total opening of $28.12 million. This is amazing for an animated film in this market and it practically guarantees more Studio Ghibli films will be released there in the future.
Dark Phoenix fell to fifth place with $11.1 million in 54 markets over the weekend for totals of $172.8 million internationally and $232.9 million worldwide. The film earned $1.8 million during its debut in Japan, which is really not good. It has matched its production budget worldwide, so at least it can save face, but it will lose money.
