Home Market Releases for June 18th, 2019

June 19, 2019

Us

It is a shallow week with a lot of films on the main list that would be secondary Blu-ray releases on a normal week. There are only two contenders for Pick of the Week: Us and Killing Eve: Season Two. The Us Blu-ray screener hasn’t arrived yet, but it is still Pick of the Week, even with an unknown quality of extras.

The Beach Bum - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
It’s a Stoner Comedy. I’m not a fan of the genre in general and this film’s reviews don’t make me want to take a chance on the film.

Eat, Play, Love - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
It’s a Hallmark Channel original movie. There are no reviews, but it is selling well enough to be included in the main list.

Giant Little Ones - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This film earned amazing reviews and opened in the $10,000 club, but it collapsed as soon as it tried to expand. This explains why it is only getting a DVD release. It is still worth picking up, but I wish it was getting a fuller release so it would be a contender for Pick of the Week.

Hotel Mumbai - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film earned solid reviews and did well when it opened, but it really struggled when it tried to expand. That happened a lot this year. The extras are limited to a quartet of featurettes, but it is still at least worth a rental, leaning towards a purchase.

Killing Eve: Season Two

Killing Eve: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
One of the best shows on TV at the moment and easily a Pick of the Week contender. This would be true, even if the DVD / Blu-ray were light on extras, which sadly appears to be the case. In fact, I can’t seem to find any information on any extras. Season one had very few extras, so this is not a surprise.

Last of The Summer Wine: Vintage 2010 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is one of the longest running shows in British TV history and more than a dozen seasons have been featured on this list over the years. I have long since run out of things to say about the show. This is the final season, so at least fans of the show will be able to complete their collections after many years of buying DVDs.

Love Tyrant: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
An incompetent Cupid messes up the lives of two humans so much so that they have to help her do her job or be cast into hell. Its Ecchi harem Anime, but even if you are into that genre, there are better options out there.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XI - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The lower cost re-releases for this show continue. On a related note, the Season Two Blu-ray arrived a little while ago. I will review it, once I get caught up on the late screeners. Hopefully that won’t take too long, but I do have a few late screeners to get through.

One Piece: Adventure of Nebulandia - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
If someone were to tell me One Piece releases have appeared on this list more than any other IP over the decade plus that I’ve been doing this job, I wouldn’t be surprised. Not in the slightest. The ratings on MAL is good, but not great, so if you like the series, the special is probably worth checking out.

Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 2 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I’m not a huge fan of this character, but I do love chronological releases.

Run the Race - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A faith-based film that earned mediocre reviews and really struggled at the box office. This explains why the DVD / Blu-ray only has a trio of featurettes for extras.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars: Season Five, Part One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The archetypal Magic Girls Anime series. The show continues to be one of the most popular Anime titles here, so it should come as no surprise that the Blu-rays continue to sell extremely well. Extras are limited to cast interviews, but that’s still better than most Anime titles get.

Slaughterhouse Rulez

Slaughterhouse Rulez - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This is the first film produced by Nick Frost and Simon Pegg’s new production company. Is it a good sign of things to come? Or is it a bad omen? Read our review for my opinion.

Suits: Season 8 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is the first season without Meghan Markle, who quit acting to become Duchess of Sussex, or something like that. This DVD is selling very well, despite the loss of the show’s most famous star.

Under the Silver Lake - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film earned mixed reviews and went nowhere in limited release. And yet it is one of the ten best-selling new releases according to Amazon. That’s a clear sign of how shallow the home market is this week.

Universal Horror Collection: Volume 1 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This four-movie box set includes two classics and even the two weaker films are worth watching. $50 for four films isn’t a major bargain, but it is still worth picking up.

Us

Us - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I’m still waiting for the screener for this film. I’m looking forward to it and even sight unseen it is a clear contender for Pick of the Week.

Will & Grace: The Revival Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Not as good as the first season of the revival, but still fine for a sitcom.

Wonder Park - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This movie lost its director when they were fired for inappropriate behavior and then they never bothered to replace them. You can tell, as this movie does have a directionless feel. Then again, the movie was also made to promote the upcoming TV series, so it might have felt directionless no matter what, because having too clear a direction would limit where the show could go.

Wakaliwood Supa Action Volume 1: Who Killed Captain Alex? + Bad Black - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Brink's Job is the secondary Blu-ray release I’m most interested in seeing. It’s a heist film and I love that genre, while the film has good reviews and I’m a fan of several members of the cast, so that’s a big selling point as well.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
The Scorpion King - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
It’s not a good movie. Stick with the original Mummy franchise instead.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
