Limited and VOD Releases: The Fall of Limited Releases
May 31, 2019
It is not a particularly busy week for limited releases, but there are some that are intriguing. The Fall of the American Empire is from Denys Arcand and that makes it worth keeping an eye on. Find Me is one of the smaller films on this week’s list, but it does currently have 100% positive reviews. Too Late to Die Young is also earning amazing reviews and it is a bigger release, but as a foreign-language film, it won’t escape the art house circuit.

Secondary VOD Releases:
Video on Demand
This is the biggest film on this week’s list, at least in terms of star power. Unfortunately, it also has the worst reviews.
A Canadian movie from famed director, Denys Arcand. The film is about an overeducated delivery man who winds up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or maybe not. There are two dead bodies, which is bad, but there is also a bag of cash, which could be the best thing to happen to him. The reviews are merely good, but not good enough to do well in limited release.
Video on Demand
This film is written, directed, and stars Tom Huang. In the film, he plays an accountant who goes looking for his missing friend, who left clues to her whereabouts in various national parks around the country. There are only five reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but all five are positive. However, it is playing on VOD, so it likely won’t find an audience in theaters.
A Russian film about the 1980s music scene in that country. The reviews are good, but I fear they are not good enough to thrive in limited release. Additionally, the director’s previous film failed to find an audience in limited release here, to be polite, so that might have an impact on this film.
A Canadian movie about a woman, Norah Sadava, dealing with the death of her mother, which sets her life on a bit of a tailspin. The reviews are right on the border between merely good and good enough for limited release. There’s not a lot of competition this week, so that could help.
A coming of age story set in post-Pinocet Chile. It follows the lives of three kids living in a remote town dealing with a changing world. The reviews are the best on this week’s list, but I fear it won’t escape the art house circuit.
A documentary about Chelsea Manning and her acts as a whistler-blower and subsequent coming out as a trans woman. It’s an important film, but the reviews are only mixed, so it will likely go nowhere at the box office.
An Egyptian film about a man who was cured of leprosy, but who never left the Leper Coloney where he grew up. That is until his wife died and he decided to learn about his roots. The reviews are good, but not good enough to thrive in limited release.

Rich Boy, Rich Girl - No Reviews - Video on Demand
There are only two secondary VOD titles this week. One has no reviews and the other has no positive reviews. You will have to look elsewhere for your entertainment choices.
