Theater Averages: Everybody Knows it’s a Slow Time for the Theater Average Chart
February 14, 2019
There was only one new release in the $10,000 club this week, Everybody Knows, which earned an average of $17,802 in four theaters. Last week’s winner, Never Look Away, expanded into three theaters earning an average of $12,942. The 2019 Oscar Shorts didn’t make the $10,000 club, but it did earn nearly $1 million in 270 theaters for an average of $3,476, which is a better than 30% increase compared to the previous installment and easily the best of the franchise. Granted, it was also the widest release in the franchise, but this is still a start worth celebrating.
A couple of other new limited releases did well on the theater average chart. To Dust managed $8,496 in its lone theater, while Lords of Chaos wasn’t too far behind with an average of $6,912 in four theaters. The Gospel of Eureka struggled, earning $3,517 in its lone theater.
We also had a trio of films that missed the Mendoza line; in fact, none of them even came close. Peppa Celebrates Chinese New Year opened with an average of $999 in 67 theaters. Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration only managed an average of $595 over the weekend; however, it earned over $500,000 in just over 400 theaters during special engagements on Thursday, so that sapped away a lot of the demand. Finally, Under the Eiffel Tower only managed an average of $360 in 11 theaters.
This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:
