2018 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Feature-Length Animated Film
February 7, 2019
With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. A lot of people call this Oscar the Pixar Award, and there is a Pixar film on this list. However, in a shocking twist, it isn’t the overwhelming favorite to win.
Best Feature-Length Animated Film of the Year
Isle of Dogs
Mirai
Ralph Breaks The Internet
Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse
Conclusion: Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse is going to win. Every bit of evidence suggests it is going to win.
Tomatometer Score: 93% Positive
Previous Major Nominations: Golden Globes, BAFTA, and PGA
Previous Major Wins: None (One Pending)
Annie Nominations: Eleven
Annie Wins: Two
Notes: Pixar movies have won this award so many times that it is impossible to dismiss this film out of hand. There is some evidence that it could win, including leading the pack in Annie nominations. However, It hasn’t been able to covert either of its previous major nominations into wins and only took home two wins at the Annies. If it won, it likely wouldn’t be the biggest shock of the night, but it would be close.
Tomatometer Score: 90% Positive
Previous Major Nominations: Golden Globes, BAFTA, and PGA
Previous Major Wins: None (One Pending)
Annie Nominations: Four
Annie Wins: One
Notes: Wes Anderson is an Indie darling and that could help this film with some Oscar voters. Also, it is the only stop-motion animated film, so that could help its chances as well. However, it is still a long shot. Probably not the longest shot, but close.
Tomatometer Score: 92% Positive
Previous Major Nominations: Golden Globes
Previous Major Wins: None
Annie Nominations: Two
Annie Wins: One
Notes: It’s Anime. It’s not going to win. Anime’s track record is so poor at the Oscars that it would take a minor miracle for this one to win. I am very happy it was nominated, on the other hand, and I hope this is a new trend.
Tomatometer Score: 89% Positive
Previous Major Nominations: Golden Globes and PGA
Previous Major Wins: None
Annie Nominations: Ten
Annie Wins: One
Notes: This film has the weakest reviews of any film on this list, it was passed over the the BAFTAs, and only won one of its ten Annie nominations. It’s a long shot to win on Oscar night.
Tomatometer Score: 97% Positive
Previous Major Nominations: Golden Globes, BAFTA, and PGA
Previous Major Wins: Two (One Pending)
Annie Nominations: Seven
Annie Wins: Seven
Notes: This film has the best reviews on this list, it has picked up three major nominations, it has won the only two awards handed out so far, and it swept all seven categories it was nominated in at the Annies. If it doesn’t win, it will be the biggest upset of the night.
