Home Market Releases for February 5th, 2019

Widows

We are finally getting to the massive fall hits on the home market, as Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch hits the home market this week. It is the biggest release, but not the best. The Pick of the Week was a coin toss between Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms and Widows. In the end, the latter won, but both are worth buying.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card - Part One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The original Cardcaptor Sakura started in the late 1990s and is still considered one of the best shōjo Anime, i.e. Anime aimed at teenage girls. The new series is almost as good as the original was, and if you are a fan of the franchise, or of Magic Girl Anime in general, it is worth picking up. Extras include a prologue and the usual clean openings and closings.

Double Dragon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is not a good movie, but I remember it being an entertaining movie, which is why I put in a request for a screener. The screener is late, but I hope it arrives soon.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Like most recent Dr. Seuss adaptations, this one is fine. It’s not good, but it is entertaining enough for its target audience. There are not a lot of extras, but if your kids like the movie, then it is probably still worth picking up.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The second, and very likely last installment in the English-language Millennium franchise. The books the film is based on were a worldwide phenomenon and the original trilogy was a major hit worldwide, especially for a non English-language series. However, they just never caught on here and I don’t think another studio is going to take a run at the books for a very long time.

Gosnell: The Trial of America's Biggest Serial Killer - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A faith-based film that is guilty of preaching to the choir, but it is more effective than most. It still struggled at the box office opening below the Mendoza Line and fading away after reaching just over $3 million. Then again, it was crowdfunded, so this isn’t a terrible result.

Gunsmoke: Season 14 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Volume One DVD and Volume Two DVD
This is a great show, but the price-per-minute is very high compared to most TV on DVD releases.

Like Arrows - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The second faith-based film on this week’s list. This one has no reviews, but is still selling rather well.

Lu Over The Wall - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An Anime title aimed at younger kids, but should entertain parents as well. Extras include an audio commentary track with the director, Masaaki Yuasa, who is also interviewed in another extra. It is worth picking up.

Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray
Video on Demand (Subbed) or Video on Demand (Dubbed)
A fantasy Anime movie about a woman, Maquia, who is an Iorph, a group of people who live extremely long lives. A local king sends his army to invade their village, hoping to capture a “wife” for his son, so that his heirs will inherit the Iorph’s longevity. Maquia isn’t captured, but she’s forced from the village, where she finds an infant human boy among the survivors and decides to raise him as her own, despite the vast difference in life expectancy. The film’s reviews are 100% positive and even though its extras are limited to a 25-minute long making of featurette, it is a Pick of the Week contender.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The reason the franchise has been able to last so long is its consistent high quality and while this movie isn’t among the best the franchise has to offer, its reviews are still good.

My Dinner with Hervé - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Peter Dinklage stars as Hervé Villechaize and Jamie Dornan stars as journalist Danny Tate. The film takes place over one night and tells the real life story of Danny interviewing Hervé and how that changed both of their lives.

A Private War - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Busted Oscar-bait. It did earn some major Awards Season nominations, but not enough to help it at the box office. The extras are not bad, especially considering its box office struggles, and it is worth picking up.

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World - Season One Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is an excellent Anime and one of the best Isekai shows from the past few years. However, the first part had some encoding issues, so I’m waiting to see if these problems are here as well. If not, then it would be Pick of the Week contender.

Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
No only is this decades old franchise still going strong, the recent releases have been excellent. Also coming out this week is Scooby Doo! double-shot.

The Sisters Brothers - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film did well in limited release, but it cost $38 million to make, so it needed to do a lot better than that to break even. This is a shame, as its reviews are a hell of a lot better than its box office numbers. The extras are a lot better than expected, given its box office troubles, and it is certainly worth picking up.

Widows - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film was co-written and directed by Steve McQueen, who assembled an amazing cast. A lot of people, myself included, thought it would be a solid box office hit and would be a player during Awards Season. Neither of those things happened. Its box office struggles have led to a weaker home market release with just a single making of featurette, but the quality of the movie is still high enough that it is a Pick of the Week contender.

You Might Be the Killer - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There’s not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases that jump out as being worth picking up. Even the Criterion Collection release, Shame, is on the weaker side of things.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack
There’s a 3D release this week, and it is the biggest release of the week.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Widows - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Widows is the much better movie, but Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch almost certainly benefits from 4K more.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
The Americans - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Batman: The Animated Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The League - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Lost in Space - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Americans is the best show with regards to Awards Season glory, but Batman: The Animated Series is arguably more important, as it introduced some of Batman’s most popular characters.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
A Boy Called Sailboat - Reviews - Video on Demand
Can You Ever Forgive Me? - Reviews - Video on Demand
Love on Safari - Reviews - Video on Demand
My Online Valentine - Reviews - Video on Demand
Overlord - Reviews - Video on Demand
Robin Hood - Reviews - Video on Demand
Winter’s Dream - Reviews - Video on Demand
I’m hoping to review both Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Overlord. I’m not sure there’s a lot of crossover audience between the two.
