Friday Estimates: 2019 Continues its Cold Start

It was a Friday to forget, and it’s going to be another bad weekend at the box office. Glass fell 69% from its opening Friday to $4.98 million this Friday. This is a sharper decline than anticipated, but even so, it should still earn a little more than $16 million over the full weekend, keeping it on pace for $100 million domestically. In other words, while this is a faster decline than predicted, it is not so fast that anyone should panic.
The Upside held on a better, earning $3.1 million on Friday to put it on pace for $11 million over the weekend. The film has already reached $50 million domestically and will top $60 million before the end of the weekend. Furthermore, it should still be in the top ten by Presidents Day long weekend, so it is far from done.
The Kid Who Would Be King and Aquaman tied for third place with $1.7 million each. However, since Aquaman is a holdover, it should have the better weekend and third place with just over $7 million over three days.
Meanwhile, The Kid Who Would Be King will land in fourth place with $7 million over the weekend. Its reviews remain a selling point, but it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore, which is weak for a family film. This is terrible for a film that cost $59 million to make. It will take a minor miracle to not lose a ton of money. Maybe if it is a much bigger international hit, it will break even, eventually.
Serenity opened in fifth place with $1.62 million, but it is not going to stay there for long, as both Green Book and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse are close behind and will overtake it shortly. The film will open under the Mendoza Line with just over $4 million this weekend. This is not a surprise, as its reviews are not helping and it only managed a D plus from CinemaScore. Granted, CinemaScore doesn’t always match quality and often times its more of a reflection of whether or not a film matched audience expectations. (Drive is a perfect example of this.) There’s no way audiences were prepared for Serenity, so it’s no surprise it did poorly with CinemaScore.
