International Box Office: Grindelwald Has Quarter Billion Dollar Global Debut
November 20, 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald started its international run with $191.5 million on 50,865 screens in 79 markets for a worldwide debut of $253.7 million. Its largest opening was in China, but it had to settle for second place there with $36.68 million on 22,008 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $37.53 million. It had more impressive debuts in the U.K. ($16.3 million on 1,823 screens) and in Russia ($12.36 million on 1,623). The film had the best opening in the Harry Potter franchise in 21 markets, but overall, it was only 3% ahead of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in the same markets. Its much weaker reviews will likely lead to shorter legs, but even so, it should still have no problem getting to $600 million worldwide and becoming Warner Bros.’ biggest hit of the year. If the next installment in the franchise falls just as much, then the studio will have reason to be concerned.
Venom was pushed into second place with $54.77 million on 22,923 screens in 85 markets for totals of $570,00 million internationally and $780.08 million worldwide. It remained in first place in China with $51.22 million on 20,000 screens for an 11-day total of $205.37 million.
Bohemian Rhapsody was relatively close behind in second place with $46.9 million in 79 markets for totals of $257.7 million internationally and $385.9 million worldwide. The film’s best market was South Korea, where it earned second place with $6.49 million on 1,179 screens for a three-week total of $24.63 million.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch remained in fourth place with $9.4 million in 23 markets for a two-week international total of $25.2 million. The film had very strong holds overall and was down just 25% in the U.K. to $4.85 million in 558 theaters for a two-week total of $12.79 million. It actually rose 11% in Brazil with $1.46 million in 530 theaters over the weekend for a total of $3.07 million after two weeks of release.
A Cool Fish opened in second place in China and fifth place overall with $9.62 million over the weekend for a total opening of $9.69 million.
