Incredibles 2

There are not many big releases on this week’s list. The Meg is the biggest, but not the best. As for the best, I’m going with Pixar Short Film Collection: Volume Three on Blu-ray.

Alpha - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A movie that tells the story of how dogs became man’s best friend. Its reviews are good, but it struggled in theaters. The extras are good, but not great; they are certainly good enough to be worth picking up if you are interested in the movie, but not enough to be a Pick of the Week contender.

Bogart and Bacall: The Complete Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I would have put this as a Pick of the Week contender, except I have all of these movies on Blu-ray already and I assume most fans of this duo have them as well. If you don’t have them, then absolutely pick them up.

The Children Act - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This film earned good reviews, but not great reviews, while it did okay at the box office.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie - Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Cowboy Bebop is one of those Anime franchises that is really close to being mainstream here. If you are new to Anime, this is a great introduction to the art form. There are not a lot of extras on the Blu-ray, but there are enough that it is worth picking up.

The Crown: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is the last season with Claire Foy as Princess Elizabeth. Since the show is spanning 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s life, they obviously need to recast the actress as the lead character ages. Fortunately, season three’s reviews have been just as good as season two’s were, so you don’t have to worry about the show going downhill with a new star.

Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
I put in a request for this title, but a screener has not yet arrived. I liked the first film, so I’m cautiously optimistic here. Last minute update: It just arrived.

Incredibles 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (With Bonus Content)
The screener arrived a little late, but I got to the review this weekend. Was it worth the wait, both in terms of the week delay in the review, and the 14 years between instalments? Read our review to find out.

Juliet, Naked - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film earned excellent reviews and did very well at the box office for a limited release. I was offered a chance to review it, but I had already put in two other requests and didn’t want to get overloaded with reviews this week. The only extra is a making of featurette. Even so, it is worth checking out for most, picking up for many.

The Librarians: Season Four - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is a fun show that sadly ended after season four. If you bought the previous installments then this is obviously worth buying. If you haven’t, then wait for the Megaset. It will likely arrive sooner rather than later.

The Meg - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I’m of two minds when it comes to this movie. On the one hand, it isn’t good in the classical sense of the word. On the other hand, it’s a movie about a giant shark and it delivers in that lower expectations way. There are only two featurettes on the Blu-ray, which is not a lot of extras, especially for a film that did as well as this one did at the box office. It is being released on 3D, which is rare these days.

Mile 22 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film earned terrible reviews and struggled at the box office. It has lots of extras, but not enough to compensate for those reviews. Skip it.

Murder, She Baked: Complete Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This would be a great collection, as it is 5 TV movies for under $20. However, it is the only way to get Just Desserts on DVD, so it feels like a cash grab.

One Piece: Collection 23 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is one of the most popular and longest-running Anime series of all time. I’ve run out of things to say about it.

Pixar Short Film Collection: Volume Three - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
I’m of two minds when it comes to this Blu-ray as well. On the one hand, these are all amazing short films and absolutely worth owning. On the other hand, if you buy the Pixar movies when they come out, then you have all of them. For me, the audio commentary tracks for each short is enough to be worth the price and even enough to make it a Pick of the Week contender.

Puzzle - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
One of the better reviewed films on this week’s list. It earned $2 million in theaters, which is more than most limited releases earn, but that wasn’t enough to get it a Blu-ray release.

ReLIFE: Final Arc - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
The final part of the Anime series. In the show, the ReLIFE program allows people who are not happy with their life to become high school students again by de-aging them and everything. The series has earned amazing reviews throughout and it is absolutely worth picking up for fans of Anime. Unfortunately, Amazon has screwed up and there’s a problem with the page. Wait a week or so to see if they fix it, or get it from the Funimation site.

Sailor Moon SuperS - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is the fourth Anime title on this week’s list. It is also arguably the most well-known. Even non-Anime fans likely know about this franchise, as it played on American TV for years. It lasted, because of its quality, so fans of animation in general will want to check it out.

The Satanic Rites of Dracula - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Even fans of Christopher Lee vampire films will want to skip this one.

Star Trek: Discovery—Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The screener for this TV show arrived while I was writing this story. I’ll try to get to the full review this weekend. I did watch the show and while it got off to a slow start, by the end, I was really into the show. I would argue that it is the second or third best first season for any Star Trek series. I’ll give more details during the full review.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon:

Lots of Christmas romance movies this week. However, one of the best-selling Christmas releases is Mrs. Claus, a Christmas horror film.

Take it Out in Trade - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Third Murder - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Windtalkers - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Special Edition Blu-ray is the secondary Blu-ray release I’m most interested, but it isn’t the only one worth buying.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
The Meg - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack
3D releases are not completely gone, but they are rare.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Justice League: Throne of Atlantis - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The Meg - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
First Blood (Rambo 1) - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Rambo (First Blood Part II) - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Rambo III - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
First Blood is the best 4K Ultra HD release of the week, but I’m not sure you need to watch it on 4K to enjoy it.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Scorpion - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is only an average show, so if you haven’t seen it, it isn’t worth picking up blind.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Alien Overlords - Reviews - Video on Demand
Comedy InvAsian: Atsuko Okatsuka - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Dick Dickster - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Equalizer 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand
Herbert West Reanimator - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Here and Now - Reviews - Video on Demand
Murder, She Baked: Just Desserts - Reviews - Video on Demand
The New Romantic - Reviews - Video on Demand
Searching - Reviews - Video on Demand
Searching is clearly the best secondary VOD release of the week, but it is so good that it is worth waiting for the Blu-ray.
