International Box Office: Venom Spreads Worldwide
October 9, 2018
Venom dominated the international chart with $127.15 million on 22,319 screens in 76 markets. Both Russia and South Korea could claim top spot for the film. In the former, it earned $14.39 million in 2,672 screens over the weekend. In the latter, it earned $10.63 million on 1,295 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $16.48 million. The film debuted in Mexico with $10.07 million on 3,465 screens. It also cracked the $10 million mark in the U.K., if you include previews, as it earned $7.42 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $10.50 million. The film has yet to open in France, Japan, and China, although I’m not convinced it will get passed Chinese censors.
Wu Shuang had its first full weekend in China, helping it earn first place in its native market and second place internationally with $37.04 million for an eight-day result of $98.27 million.
Shadow was next with $17.54 million over the weekend for a total of $65.07 million, also after eight days of release.
The third Chinese film in a row was Hello, Mrs. Money with $14.95 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $74.12 million.
A Star is Born rounded out the top five with $14.2 million on 4,440 screens in 31 markets. The film’s biggest opening was in the U.K. where it made $5.35 million on 809 screens over the weekend. It also cracked $1 million in both France ($2.2 million on 338 screens) and Germany ($1.8 million on 460).
Johnny English Strikes Again was so close to fifth place that it actually landed in the top five on Sunday’s estimates. However, Monday’s finals had it in sixth place with $13.7 million in 49 markets for an international total of $66.1 million. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $5.38 million on 569 screens, which is almost identical to the opening the first film in the franchise managed, but significantly behind Reborn’s $7.73 million debut.
Incredibles 2 fell out of the top ten with $6.9 million in 19 markets for totals of $614.2 million internationally and $1.221 billion worldwide. The film is now in 16th place on the All-time Global Chart and could have enough gas in the tank to pass The Fate of the Furious for 15th place.
