Friday Estimates: Wasp Towers Above the Competition
July 7, 2018
Ant-Man and the Wasp dominated the box office on Friday with $33.80 million. This is about $1 million less than we would have liked to have seen after its Thursday previews, but still above our earlier prediction. Its reviews are 86% positive, and it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, which is good for a blockbuster, but I was expecting an A like the original Ant-Man earned and it is below average for the MCU.
Incredibles 2 held on better than expected with $9.82 million on Friday, putting it on pace for between $32 million and $33 million. It will get to $500 million domestically before the end of the weekend.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom added $9.11 million on Friday and Universal is estimating just under $31 million for the full weekend. It remains on pace for $400 million domestically, but it might need a little push over the top to get there.
The First Purge managed $6.06 million during its first Friday, which isn’t bad, but we were expecting a little more than $7 million during the film’s third day of release. That said, Universal is estimating a three-day opening total of $18.46 million, which is more than it cost to make. Add in its weekday numbers and the film’s five-day opening is estimated at over $32 million, meaning the studio’s share it more than it cost to make. Assuming the film doesn’t collapse, it will break even just on the domestic theatrical numbers. Its reviews are fine at 52% positive, while it earned a B minus on CinemaScore, which is fine for a horror movie. It likely won’t get to $70 million domestically, but that’s more than enough to be a financial success.
We have box office numbers for just one limited release, Whitney, which struggled with $485,000. It seems odd to describe a limited release earning $485,000 during its opening day as struggling, but the film is playing in 454 theaters, so its opening day average is just $1,069.
