Home Market Releases for June 12th, 2018
June 12, 2018
There are not many big releases on this week’s list. Tomb Raider, Sherlock Gnomes, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and Love, Simon were, at best, midlevel hits domestically. Worse still, only the last one earned good reviews. Fortunately, the film is good enough that the DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack is worthy as Pick of the Week.

The latest release from the MVD Rewind Collection. Usually these films are from the VHS era, but this one was made in 2006. If you want to see a creature feature about Bigfoot, then the reviews suggest it is worth checking out. It isn’t a classic of the genre, on the other hand.
This show is very popular compared to most Anime titles, but the reviews on My Anime List are merely good and not great. There are very little extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, but this is common for Anime releases.
One of Eddie Murphy’s biggest hits and a comedy that is worth owning. It’s a shame the Anniversary Edition has almost no extras and feels like a budget release rather than a proper special edition. Also coming out this week is another lackluster anniversary edition to an Eddie Murphy classic, as Trading Places is also coming out on Blu-ray.
One of the most popular recent Anime series and not only was it seen by a huge number of people, it earned amazing reviews as well. The extras are also better than most Anime titles with commentary tracks on three of the episodes, including a video commentary track on one of them.
This 10-disc box set contains more than a dozen complete specials, appearances on other shows, and even an audio disc. Most of the discs are DVD, because most of the specials were shot before HD TV was even a fantasy, but there are a couple of Blu-rays in the set.
Video on Demand
One of the better faith-based movies to come out recently. It does have some crossover appeal, although it is aimed at churchgoers and they are most likely to enjoy the movie. Extras include an audio commentary track, several making of featurettes, deleted scenes, etc. If you are a fan of faith-based movies, then it is worth picking up. If you are just a fan of musical biographical films, it is at least worth a rental.
This Rock Opera from the 1970s is the latest NBC live concert broadcast. Not every broadcast has won over critics, but this one certainly did. Its Tomatometer Score is 100% positive and the average is 8.3 out of 10. The lack of a Blu-ray release is disappointing, but if you are a fan of musicals in general or of this Rock Opera in particular, then it is a must have.
Video on Demand
One of the best-reviewed wide releases of the year. It is a Young Adult adaptation, which is a genre that has gone off it’s peak. On the other hand, it did very well at the box office, compared to its $10 million production budget, and should have no trouble breaking even early in its home market run. The DVD / Blu-ray has an audio commentary track, several making of / behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and more. If you are in the target audience, then it is Pick of the Week material. If you are not, it is still worth checking out at the very least.
After four seasons with a Tomatometer Score of more than 90%, this season it fell to just 74% positive. That’s still a good score, but if it doesn’t recover for season six, there might not be a season seven. Extras are better than a lot of Netflix shows, with an audio commentary track on two episodes, a making of featurette, and deleted scenes. It is still worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.
This low-budget creature feature went the horror / comedy route instead of the straight horror its predecessor did. Was this a mistake? Can it still entertain? Read our review to find out.
Why is this selling so well? Didn’t the United States fight a war so they didn’t have to pay attention to the Royal Family anymore?
Video on Demand
This is a TV pilot for a TV show that wasn’t picked up. It is being sold as a separate movie, but does it work as a separate movie? Does it at least work as a pilot? Check out our review for my opinion.
Video on Demand
This is one of the biggest box office hits on this week’s list. However, this is a case of damning it with faint praise. Even if you have kids of the right age group, there are better options out there.
Video on Demand
This film couldn’t live up to the original, either at the box office or with critics. It is close enough in quality that if you liked the original enough to buy it, this film is also worth a purchase. However, if you gave the first film a pass, this one is also worth skipping.
I think season eight will be the show’s last season. Not only are half the main cast gone, but so is over half of the show’s audience. There is a spin-off in the works, so I think that show will remain while this one is gone.
Video on Demand
This is one of the best-reviewed video game movies of all time and it still failed to earn 50% positive reviews. The film struggled here, but did well enough internationally that it still has a shot at breaking even relatively soon. Extras are limited to a quartet of making of featurettes, which is not great for a wide release, but still enough to be worth picking up for fans of the movie / game.
This is either the first season of The Revival or season nine of the original show. The reviews were good, as were the ratings, plus no one in the main cast tweeted anything racist, so it’s getting a second season. The extras include a trio of featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes.
