April 12, 2017
Colossal led the way on the theater average chart with an average of $30,057 in four theaters. Meanwhile, Their Finest was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $19,049 also in four theaters.
The rest of the new limited releases had a wide range of results. Gifted was one of widest limited releases of the week, but it still did very well with an average of $7,971 in 56 theaters. Truman earned an average of $6,086 in three theaters. Your Name was the widest limited release of the week playing in 292. It still did well with an average of $5,608. Graduation was close behind with an average of $5,153, but it was only playing in two theaters, so it is not as impressive. The Transfiguration struggled with $4,605 in its lone theater. Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock was playing in two theaters and opened with an average of $3,347. A Kind of Loving only managed $3,278 in its lone theater.
There were also three films that failed to top the Mendoza Line, but two of the three were also playing on VOD, so this isn’t a disaster. The Void came the closest to the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,774 in 31 theaters. Not only was it playing in a lot of theaters, it was also playing on VOD. It undoubtedly did better on the home market, especially given its reviews. All These Sleepless Nights didn’t have VOD as a mitigating factor, as it earned an average of $1,664 in three theaters. The final new release of the week was Alive and Kicking, which opened with an average of $1,109 in 11 theaters. It too earned great reviews and likely did much, much better on VOD.
