Theater Averages: Kitty Powers its Way to the Top with $11,418

February 23, 2017

Kedi

Kedi remained in first place with an average of $11,418 in seven theaters. It is doing quite well for a documentary. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Chapter and Verse with $10,928 in its lone theater.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was Keep Quiet, which earned an estimated $6,500 in its lone theater. It was the only other limited release to do well. Everybody Loves Somebody was well back with an average of $2,775. It was playing in 333 theaters, so this isn’t a real surprise. From Nowhere was right behind with an average of $2,704 in two theaters. Lovesong was relatively close behind with $2,215 in one theater. XX missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $888 in 7 theaters. Normally missing the Mendoza Line is an unmitigated disaster. However, the film is also playing in VOD, so it likely did a whole lot better on the home market.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Jolly LLB 2 got to $1 million before the weekend. However, like most Bollywood films, it’s legs are not long and it likely won’t get to $2 million.
  • 2017 Oscar Shorts hit $1 million just before the weekend, and could get to $2 million before the weekend.
  • Un Padre No Tan Padre crossed $2 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • I Am Not Your Negro raced to $2 million before the weekend and $3 million over the weekend. This is excellent for a documentary.
  • The Eagle Huntress is the second documentary to reach $3 million this week.
  • Lion made it all the way to $25 million before the weekend and $30 million during the weekend.
  • Fences made it to $55 million over the weekend while it could win a few Oscars and that might help it get to $60 million.
  • La La Land has made it all the way to $130 million, putting it ahead of Ghostbusters on the yearly chart.
  • Hidden Figures remains the biggest limited release hit of 2016 earning more than $140 million at the box office putting it just behind Kung Fu Panda 3 on the 2016 chart.
