International Box Office: xXx has an Extreme Start with $50.5 million
January 25, 2017
xXx: Return of Xander Cage easily took first place on the international chart with $50.5 million in 53 markets. The film’s biggest market was India, where it pulled in $7.4 million. Russia was second best with $5.39 million on 1,191 screens. The film had similar debuts in France ($3.1 million); Germany ($2.8 million); Mexico ($2.62 million); and Australia ($2.24 million on 331 screens). This film is clearly doing better internationally than it is domestically, but it will need about $200 million worldwide to have any chance of breaking even any time soon.
La La Land rose to second place with $16.6 million in 57 markets for totals of $83.7 million internationally and $173.5 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening of the weekend came from Brazil, where it earned $2.1 million on 301 screens, including previews. Its biggest market of the weekend was the U.K., where it added $5.39 million in 674 theaters to its running tally, which now sits at $18.36 million. However, its biggest market overall is still South Korea, where it has $21.79 million, including $344,000 on 243 screens this past weekend.
Passengers slipped to third place with $13.22 million in 76 markets on 17,158 screens for totals of $175.73 million internationally and $270.21 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend. It did remain strong in China with $6.81 million on 8,000 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $34.18 million after two weeks of release. If the film can get to $300 million worldwide, then it will have an excellent shot at breaking even sometime on the home market.
Moana rose a spot to fourth with $12.9 million in 40 markets for totals of $272.5 million internationally and $509.5 million worldwide. It became the 15th film released in 2016 to hit $500 million worldwide, seven of which were released by Disney. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did earn first place in Argentina with $1.4 million. It pulled in $500,000 in Turkey, which might not seem like a lot, but it is a new record for an animated film in that market. The film doesn’t finish its run until March when it debuts in Japan. It might break even before it gets there.
The King and Arrival could both argue that they earned fifth place. The King made $13.22 million on 1,310 screens in South Korea, but only $9.66 million of that was earned over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Arrival pulled in $9.8 million in 46 markets for totals of $74.6 million internationally and $170.3 million worldwide.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story fell out of the top five, but that doesn’t mean there’s no news to report. In fact, it was an important week, as it topped $1 billion worldwide. Over the weekend, the film earned $9.0 million in 45 markets for totals of $499.1 million internationally and $1.011 billion worldwide. By this time next week, it will likely be in second place on the 2016 worldwide chart.
