International Box Office: Beasts have a Fantastic Month
December 14, 2016
For the fourth and final time, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned first place on the international chart, this time earning $33.1 million in 67 markets. It now has totals of $480.7 million internationally and $679.6 million worldwide. This will be the last weekend the film will spend in first place, but it should last long enough to overtake Suicide Squad on the 2016 Worldwide chart.
Moana returned to second place with $23.5 million in 32 markets over the weekend for totals of $93.8 million internationally and $238.5 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, and has no major market openings this coming weekend. It does open in Germany and Italy on the 22nd and in Australia on the 26th. Once we have those numbers, we will have a much better idea of where it will finish.
Office Christmas Party debuted in third place with $16.4 million in 49 markets. The film was only able to top $1 million in one market, Russia, where it earned second place with $2.21 million on 1,100 screens. It looks like it will do well internationally earning more than it will domestically, which isn’t that common for R-rated comedies. These films generally don’t translate well.
Hacksaw Ridge entered the top five for the first time with $15.0 million in 18 markets for totals of $37.3 million internationally and $98.1 million worldwide. The film earned second place in China with $14.49 million over the weekend for a four-day opening of $17.06 million.
Your Name remained in first place in China with $15.50 million over the weekend for a total of $71.37 million after 11 days of release. Add in its run in Japan and other markets and you get a running tally of $276 million worldwide.
