Thursday Night Previews: Conjuring 2 Re-Capture's Box Office Might with $3.4 million
June 10, 2016
The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist had the best run during Midnight showings earning $3.4 million on Thursday. By comparison, The Conjuring earned $3.3 million during its previews. The Enfield Poltergeist does have a good Tomatometer Score (74% positive), but the Sequel Effect will still be in play and that will limit the film's weekend box office. Look for $35 million, or close to it. This will make it the biggest horror release of 2016 by Sunday, perhaps as early as Saturday.
Warcraft was close behind with $3.1 million; however, before we get too excited, the film also has the biggest Fanboy quotient and it is smarter to compare it to comic book movies instead of a horror movie. This is better than the $2 million Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows managed last week, but only a fraction of the $12.7 million Deadpool earned during its previews. Its reviews won't help either, but it appears we've underestimated the film's box office potential and getting close to $30 million is possible. On the other hand, we also underestimated the film's P&A budget, which was reportedly $110 million worldwide. Add that into the film's $160 million production budget and the movie will need roughly $500 million worldwide to have any chance of breaking even any time soon.
Now You See Me 2 was well back with $1.75 million. This is better than Now You See Me's $1.5 million it earned, but weak reviews and the Sequel Effect will result in a smaller opening weekend. Look for a $22 million to $23 million opening weekend. This isn't a disaster, but it is also not enough to be considered a box office hit either.
