Friday Estimates: Turtles Take Top Spot with $12.5 million
June 4, 2016
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows bounced back from Thursday’s weak previews with $12.5 million on Friday. There was further good news, as the film’s CinemaScore was an A-, up nearly a full letter grade from the B its predecessor earned. This will be enough for first place over the weekend with $33 million. That’s not a good enough opening to get to $100 million, so the film will need to perform well internationally to break even any time soon. On the other hand, reports have the film performing better with kids than adults, so it could break even on merchandising alone.
Me Before You landed in second place with $7.75 million. It should have the best internal multiplier of all of the wide releases this week. Not only does it have the most mature target audience, its audience reaction is the best at 85% positive and its CinemaScore was a solid A. Look for a $19 million opening weekend, which is almost as much as it cost to make. However, it won’t be enough to keep second place.
X-Men: Apocalypse was pushed into third place on Friday with $6.55 million and will finish the weekend with $22 million. That’s a little on the low end of the range of expectations, but close enough to our prediction to be a victory.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is yet another example of why you should never rely on internet advertising to sell a movie. (Not that we needed an example of this so soon after Keanu.) The film missed the top five on Friday with just $1.77 million. Worse still, while its reviews were the best out of the three wide releases, its CinemaScore was just a B. Anything below a B+ usually means weak legs. It will earn closer to $4 million than $5 million, meaning it is on pace to miss the Mendoza Line.
