International Box Office: Ip Man 3 has First Place Debut with $75.0 million, maybe.
March 10, 2016
It's a really bad week for international numbers, but not because the box office numbers are low. Ip Man 3 reportedly opened in first place with $75.0 million in three markets over the weekend for a total of $76.5 million. This includes $71.28 million in its native China. I say "reportedly" because this week this story broke. If this is true, then we will have to doubt any box office number coming out of China. This is a mess. Chinese films regularly reach the top five on the international chart, so if we can't trust the official reports, it makes these figures nearly useless.
Zootopia remained in second place with $63.4 million in 45 markets over the weekend for totals of $158.8 million internationally and $233.9 million worldwide. Its biggest market was China, where it managed second place with $23.54 million over the weekend. It also topped the charts in Russia with $7.9 million and in Germany with $6.62 million on 919 screens. It is still too soon to tell where it will finish with, but it is well on its way to profitability.
Deadpool fell from first to third with $21.2 million in 73 markets for totals of $362.0 million internationally and $673.5 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but even if it doesn't earn another dollar, it has already made enough money to justify a trilogy.
Gods of Egypt remained in fourth place with $15.7 million in 73 markets for totals of $49.6 million internationally and $72.6 million worldwide. Granted, it is doing better internationally than it did domestically, but its worldwide total is barely half of what it cost to make, so it is still a stunning bomb.
The Revenant rounded out the top five with $12.5 million in 47 theaters for totals of $253.0 million internationally and $429.1 million worldwide.
