International Box Office: Deadpool Has Double-Milestone Weekend with $40.2 million
March 3, 2016
Deadpool reached two milestones this weekend topping $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide. Over the weekend, the film added $40.2 million in 74 markets to its running tally, which now sits at $324.1 million internationally and $609.4 million worldwide. At this pace, the film will have no trouble getting to $400 million internationally and $700 million worldwide. It is massively profitable, but I am worried the studio will double, or triple, the production budget of the sequel and then insist on more control over the process, because the stakes are higher.
Zootopia climbed a spot to second with $30.0 million in 31 markets, for a three-week total of $81.4 million internationally. The film's biggest new market was Russia, where it earned second place with $1.45 million on 806 screens, but that was for a two-day limited preview. I think these numbers will be rolled into next week's full debut. Its best actual opening was in Sweden where it earned first place with $1.34 million on 244 screens. Its biggest market of the weekend was France, where it pulled in $6.15 million on 647 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.44 million after two weeks of release. It only dipped 24% during its second weekend in France, which is great news for its legs. It should top Deadpool in that market in the end.
The Mermaid slipped to third. It pulled in $28.05 million over the weekend in China giving it a total of $478.05 million after 21 days of release in its native market. Internationally, it crossed $500 million just after the weekend. This is the biggest Chinese movie of all time.
Ugh. Gods of Egypt only managed fourth place with $24.2 million in 68 markets. Its best market was Russia where it earned first place with $4.30 million on 1,965 screens. That's better than it managed here, but that's hardly a high bar to cross. Worse still, the film bombed in many markets, like Australia where it only managed fourth place with $652,000 on 265 screens. It was even worse in Italy landing in sixth place with $744,000 on 350. Just matching its $140 million production budget worldwide is not a safe bet.
The Revenant returned to the top five with $14.1 million in 44 theaters for a total of $233.5 million internationally and a worldwide total of $404.2 million. More than half of the film's box office came from France, where it opened in first place with $7.97 million on 540 screens.
