Per Theater Chart: Feeling the Love

November 5, 2015

Love

There were only two films in the $10,000 club this weekend, with Love leading the way with an average of $14,651 in two theaters. Heart of a Dog remained in the $10,000 club with $10,316 in one theater. That bodes well for its long-term chances.

None of the rest of the new limited releases were close to $10,000, but most were not terrible. Flowers and The Wonders both opened in one theater a piece earning $6,572 and $5,840 respectively. Heneral Luna earned an average of $5,162 in three theaters. The biggest limited release of the week was The Witness, which earned an average of $4,868 in 40 theaters. That's not bad. On the other hand, Making Rounds was bad with an opening of $1,056 in one theater. Even worse, Sex, Death and Bowling only pulled in $50 in one theater. That's the second worst opening average for the year and fifth worst for the millennium.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Goodbye Mommy hit $1 million before the weekend. This is great for a limited release, especially a foreign-language film. However, it won't get any further.
  • Truth reached $1 million over the weekend. It has a shot at $2 million, but its per theater average is so low that it will likely see its theater count evaporate this weekend.
  • Likewise, He Named Me Malala made it to $2 million very early last week, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Sicario did even better than expected hitting $40 million before the weekend. $45 million seems inevitable and if it can pick up some Awards Season nominations, it could reach $50 million.
