Home Market Numbers: Age of Fury
October 6, 2015
A lot of new releases from the week of September 8th reached the top 30 on the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for September 13th, but none were able to overtake Mad Max: Fury Road. The film sold 342,000 units / $8.29 million over the week for a two-week total of 1.34 million units / $30.99 million.
The Age of Adaline opened in second place with 216,000 units / $3.47 million in sales. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 28%, which isn't bad for a romantic drama. Barbie in Rock 'n' Royals had a early release on DVD last week and a full release this week earning third place with 85,000 units / $1.14 million for the week giving it a total opening of 100,000 / $1.34 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 13%, which is on par with kids releases like this. Home remained in the top five one more week earning fourth place with 81,000 units / $1.45 million for the week giving it totals of 2.38 million units / $44.79 million. Supernatural: Season 10 rounded out the top five with 61,000 units / $1.77 million giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 18%. It isn't uncommon for TV on DVD releases to have low Blu-ray share, but this TV show should have performed better.
American Heist earned seventh place with 48,000 units / $609,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 23%, which is low for an action film, even one that was a limited release. Homeland: The Complete Fourth Season was right behind with 46,000 units / $1.25 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just under 20%. I'm not surprised so many shows have stopped releasing on Blu-ray.
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey’s Monster Musical opened in 14th place with 28,000 units / $424,000, all of which was sold on DVD. Gotham: The Complete First Season debuted in 16th place with 27,000 units / $1.04 million. This is a Fanboy release, so I'm not surprised its opening week Blu-ray share was strong at 48%. The final new release to chart was Thomas & Friends: Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure, which earned 27th place with 18,000 units / $245,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 5%. I doubt sales will cover the high definition mastering costs.
We had a holdover on top of the chart and the best new release wasn't a good release for high definition. As a result, the overall Blu-ray chart plummeted from both last week and last year. Week-over-week, Blu-ray sales were down 38% in terms of units and 40% in terms of revenue. Year-over-year, it was even worse, with Blu-ray sales down 65% in terms of units and 53% in terms of revenue. DVD sales were also down, but not by nearly this much. This left the overall Blu-ray share at 33%, compared to 42% for last week and 53% compared to last year. Things will bounce back next week.
The overall DVD market fell 9.4% in terms of units and 14% in terms of revenue when compared to last week. Sales were even worse compared to last year, down 19% fewer units sold, while the revenue was 29% lower.
Next week's new releases have not one, but two monster hits. Cinderella's domestic box office topped $200 million, while Furious 7 is one of the biggest hits of all time. Combined, they should sell between 3 million and 4 million units. That's more than the past two weeks combined. This weekend last year wasn't bad either with Godzilla leading the way overall and on Blu-ray, while The Fault in Our Stars led the way on DVD. Even so, 2015 should destroy 2014 in the year-over-year comparison.
