Home Market Numbers: Kings Among Men

It was a busy week in real life, with the July Preview, Canada Day, and July 4th holidays messing with schedules. Because of that, the home market numbers were late this week. However, this week's numbers will be up in the next two days, so it was a very short disruption. That said, there's not much to talk about when it comes to new releases on the home video sales charts for the week ending June 14. Sure, The Kingsman: Secret Service earned first place on the home market chart, but there was only one other new release in the top five and only a few others in the top 30. The number one release of the week sold 591,000 units and generated $10.29 million in consumer spending. This includes an opening week Blu-ray share of 51%. Anything above 50% is worth celebrating; however, the overall numbers are still lower than anticipated.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water slipped to second place with 187,000 units / $3.54 million for the week, giving it totals of 746,000 units / $14.46 million after two. I can't imagine there won't be another installment in this franchise. American Sniper remained in third place with 162,000 units / $2.82 million over the week for totals of 2.38 million units / $44.13 million after four weeks of release. The film is showing better legs than most on the home market, but it also started a lot slower than it should have giving its box office success. The only other new release in the top five was The DUFF, which earned fourth place with 140,000 units / $2.17 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 23%, which is weak, but not unexpected given its genre / target demographic. Jupiter Ascending fell to fifth place with 122,000 units / $2.57 million for the week giving it two-week totals of 531,000 units / $11.41 million. This was a very expensive movie to make, so it needed to a lot better than this to break even anytime soon.
The next best new release was Project Almanac, which only managed eighth place with 70,000 units / $1.18 million. This is weak, but it did bomb at the box office, so it is not unexpected. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 45%, which is good for this type of release. Serena only opened on VOD and missed the Mendoza Line during its limited release debut, so opening in 13th place with 41,000 units / $463,000 is actually better than expected. Its opening week Blu-ray share 21%, which is not good, but it was a drama that opened on VOD, so this result was expected. The final new release of the week to chart was Teen Wolf: Season 4, which placed 22nd with 24,000 units / $424,000. It didn't have a Blu-ray release.
The overall home market was just not good. Blu-ray sales were down significantly when compared ot last week and last year. Week-over-week, sales were down 15% in terms of units and 29% in terms of revenue. Year-over-year, things were even worse, down 39% in terms of units and 31% in terms of revenue. Ouch. Simply ouch. The overall Blu-ray market fell faster than the Overall DVD market, leaving the overall Blu-ray share down to 37%. By comparison, this week last year, it was 46%.
Overall DVD sales were also down compared to last week and last year, but the declines weren't as bad as for Blu-ray. Compared to last week, 8.8% fewer units were sold and the total revenue was 20% lower. Compared to last year, 11% fewer units were sold and total revenue was 23% lower.
Next week's new releases will be led by Chappie, which failed to make much of an impact at the box office, so the home market will very likely fall week-over-week. The same week last year saw the release of The LEGO Movie, which dominated both the DVD sales chart and the Blu-ray sales chart. 2015 is going to get destroyed in the year-over-year comparison.
