Home Market Numbers: Taken Helps Home Market Bounce Back, Sort Of

May 23, 2015

Taken 3

After two weeks with no prime releases, this week we have one prime new release, Taken 3. It dominated the Blu-ray sales chart with about 44% of the total overall Blu-ray market. This was enough to help the overall Blu-ray market grow 23% in terms of units and 13% in terms of revenue when compared to last week. Compared to last year, the Blu-ray market was 5.6% lower in terms of units and 18% lower in terms of revenue. Changes in the DVDs sales were nearly identical, so the overall Blu-ray share remained at 34%.

Taken 3 was also the only release of note on the DVD sales chart with about 40% of total units sold. It helped DVD sales grow 19% in terms of units and 18% in terms of revenue when compared to last week. DVD sales were also lower when compared to last year, down 26% in terms of units and 31% in terms of revenue.

Next week's new releases will be led by Paddington, but it is far from the only new release of note. This weekend last year, the biggest new release was The Legend of Hercules. It led the way on both the Blu-ray sales chart and the DVD sales chart. Paddington should top The Legend of Hercules on the top, but I'm not sure about the depth. 2015 could come out on top in the year-over-year comparison.
