DVD Sales: Last Soars to First

August 30, 2010

New releases this week were dominated by The Last Song, which outsold the second place film on this week's sales chart by a two-to-one margin. It won the week with 761,000 units and $13.69 million in revenue. Dexter: Season Four opened way back in second place with 367,000 units, but that's still a huge number for a TV on DVD release. Also, its sales were $10.99 million, which was much closer to the first place film than it was in terms of units sold. Date Night fell to third place with 233,000 units / $3.78 million in sales for the week lifting its totals to 845,000 units / $14.36 million after two. Furry Vengeance placed fourth with just 182,000 units / $2.45 million. The less said about this film, the better. Rounding out the top five was Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which crossed the million unit mark over the past week. It sold 121,000 units giving it a total of 1.02 million units sold and $17.57 million in sales.

The only other new release to chart was One Tree Hill: Season Seven, which placed ninth with 74,000 units, but thanks to its TV on DVD price, it placed fourth by that metric with $2.75 million.

Blu-ray was down again this week slipping 7% to $13.4 million for the week. Compared to DVD, this represented just 9% of total sales and 14% of the top 20 comparison. This is only the second time since February that Blu-ray represented less than 10% of total sales, while this was the format's weakest showing in the top 20 comparison since the beginning of April. If there's any glimpse of good news, it's that overall sales were up close to 1% from this time last year. That's not a lot to celebrate. The best selling Blu-ray of the week was The Last Song with just 80,000 units. Granted, this is not the kind of film that usually does well in High Definition, but you would still hope for more out of the number one film. Second place went to Dexter: Season Four, which sold 60,000 units, which is excellent for a TV on Blu-ray release.

Next week's sales will include Lost, so hopefully we will see increases in both DVD and Blu-ray numbers.
