Blu-ray Sales: Lucy has Diamond Debut on Blu
February 9, 2015
New releases dominated the Blu-ray Sales Chart earning the top three spots. This includes Lucy, which opened in first place with 425,000 units / $8.71 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 54%. Action films tend to do really well on Blu-ray, so this result isn't too much of a surprise.
The Boxtrolls opened in second place with 164,000 units / $5.20 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 51%. Family films tend to not do that well on Blu-ray, so this suggests a large adult crossover appeal here. The third new release of the week was Annabelle with 113,000 units / $2.59 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 44%. Horror films don't do as well as action films on Blu-ray, so this is a good opening. The Grand Budapest Hotel rose to fourth place with 94,000 units / $901,000 over the week for a total of 280,000 units / $4.08 million. The film has sold almost as many Blu-rays in the past two weeks as it did during the first two months of release. Gone Girl fell from first to fifth with 81,000 units / $1.65 million during the week for totals of 398,000 units / $7.86 million after two weeks of release.
The only other new release to chart was The Drop, which landed in eighth place with 28,000 units / $568,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 42%, which is great for a limited release.
