Blu-ray Sales: Girl Feeling Blu

February 2, 2015

There were not a lot of new releases to reach the top twenty on the Blu-ray sales chart this week, but we did have a new film on top. Gone Girl earned first place with 342,000 / $6.64 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 43%. This isn't bad, for a thriller. Likewise, A Walk Among the Tombstones did well with an opening week Blu-ray share of 43% from 124,000 units / $2.65 million. The Equalizer was pushed to third place with 58,000 units / $1.39 million over the week for a total of 716,000 units / $15.14 million after three. This is a solid run, but not exceptional. Guardians of the Galaxy was right behind with 55,000 units / $1.38 million over the week for totals of 3.76 million units / $79.75 million. It is one of the best-selling Blu-rays of all time and will likely climb the chart when the sequel comes out. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bounced back into the top five with 28,000 units / $549,000 for the week for a month-long total of 2.17 million units / $42.37 million. This is definitely enough to get a sequel.

There were two other new releases to chart, the same two as on the DVD chart. Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power opened in tenth place with 18,000 units / $420,000 for the week for an opening weekend Blu-ray share of 29%. This is bad for an action film, even for a direct-to-DVD release. Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Fifth Season opened in 15th place with 11,000 units / $458,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 32%. That's not bad for a TV on DVD release.
