Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: The Eras Tour holds off Five Nights at Freddy’s to remain widest release
October 26th, 2023
Despite dropping 82 locations this week, TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR will remain the widest release for the third consecutive week, still available in a 3,773 theaters, outpacing a bevy of newcomers, including the supernatural horror, Five Nights at Freddy’s as it makes its way into theaters. The concert film will likely fall into second place at the box office, but there are still plenty of opportunities to see the mega event on the big screen.

Theater counts: PAW Patrol’s 4,027 theaters beats The Exorcist
October 5th, 2023
Second week is a charm for the latest in the PAW Patrol series as Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie increases its paw print this week, expanding from just under 4,000 locations, into 4,027 theaters. That count is the widest a film has been since Barbie posted 4,178 locations back on August 10th. The animated feature chewed up $22.74 million in its opening weekend, outshining its nearest competitor by over $4 million. This week will see another franchise film take to the big screen in the way of The Exorcist: Believer, along with another horror movie and a bewitching Halloween favorite, returning to theaters for its 30th anniversary.

Weekend projections: PAW Patrol wins the battle for top spot
October 1st, 2023
The pups of PAW Patrol rarely lose their battles on screen, and they are posting another victory off screen this weekend, heading to a weekend win at the box office with a projected $23 million debut. That’s just a shade higher than our Friday-morning prediction, and enough to see off two films that looked like contenders going into the weekend: Saw X with $18 million, and The Creator with $14 million.

Theater counts: The Creator lands on top as trio of new films arrive in cinemas
September 28th, 2023
After a lackluster few weeks, this weekend sees three new films open wide, along with an even wider expansion for Dumb Money. While none of this week’s new arrivals will likely make a monumental splash, they should nevertheless deliver a fun and competitive weekend at the domestic box office, while providing movie aficionados with a wider range of genres to choose from.

Theater Counts: Free Guy edges out Candyman to remain widest release
August 26th, 2021
After dethroning Jungle Cruise two weeks ago, and keeping four wide releases at bay last week, Free Guy once again leads this week’s theater counts. The film has earned just over $64 million domestically and an estimated $117 million worldwide in its first 13 days in release. The theater count does drop from 4,165 last week to 3,940 this week, but is still good enough to fend off Candyman—the latest feature from Universal Pictures—which debuts in 3,569 locations. Candyman is a sequel to the original 1992 horror film of the same name and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Still near the top of our list is the previously-mentioned Jungle Cruise, which has amassed just north of $94 million in North America, and $175 million worldwide. The adventure film plays in 3,370 locations this week. Of the four wide releases to debut last week, the best earner at the box office was the animated kids feature, PAW Patrol: The Movie. The film scored $13.1 million in its first three days from 3,184 locations and expands to 3,189 this week.

Weekend prediction: PAW Patrol has a shot at winning the weekend
August 20th, 2021
The pups of PAW Patrol are fighting to save the citizens of Adventure City on screen this weekend, and trying to do their bit to keep the theatrical business rolling after several turbulent weeks. Our model thinks they have a shot at knocking Free Guy off the top of the chart, but with four wide releases coming out this weekend there’s a lot to choose from for moviegoers.

Theater counts: Free Guy unseats Jungle Cruise, while Respect and Don’t Breathe 2 post solid counts
August 12th, 2021
After having only one new wide release debut last week, this week will see three arrive in theaters. The largest of the three is 20th Century Studios’ oft-delayed action comedy, Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film about a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, opens in 4,165 theaters. The count is enough to topple Jungle Cruise from its two week reign as widest release, as the latter drops to 3,900 theaters this week. Next up is the biographical drama Respect, from United Artists Releasing and starring Jennifer Hudson as the late “Queen of Soul”, Aretha Franklin. The film opens in 3,207 locations. Lastly, is Sony Pictures, Don’t Breathe 2, the follow up to Don’t Breathe, which earned a worldwide total of $170 million nearly five years ago. The horror film, which returns Stephen Lang as “The Blind Man” releases in 3,005 theaters…
