Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Spider-Man weaves its way into theaters, but The Little Mermaid remains widest release

June 1st, 2023

The Little Mermaid

After a robust Memorial day weekend start, The Little Mermaid retains its opening count of 4,320 theaters from last week, once again owning the title of widest release on both land and sea. The latest adaptation of the charming franchise gathered $95.58 million from North American theaters, while earning less overseas with a take of $68.3 million. This week however the film will slip into second place at the box office as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters. More...

The Little Mermaid

It’s a very solid weekend for moviegoers as not only are there five new wide releases arriving in cinemas, but films like Fast X and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are still pulling in respectable numbers and are available in around 4,000 locations. Despite being the second-widest release in its big screen debut last weekend, the former sped away with the best numbers at the box office, scoring just over $67 million over the weekend and currently enjoying a six-day domestic total of $81.9 million. This weekend though, all eyes are on The Little Mermaid. More...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Entering its third week at the box office, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will three-peat as the widest release by retaining its count of 4,450 theaters from its first two weeks. The film currently enjoys a global box office total of $545 million, with $231 million of that coming from North American cinemas. Unlike last week and next week, we see only one wide release hitting theaters, but it’s a big one: Fast X. More...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

After making its theatrical debut in 4,450 theaters last week, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 holds off a handful of new wide releases this week to keep its spot as the widest release. The latest Marvel feature finished out its opening weekend by earning over $118 million domestically, while grabbing $170 million from overseas markets. So far the Chris Pratt-led superhero movie enjoys a worldwide total of $365 million, with $145 million coming out of North America. That takes the Guardians franchise over $2 billion worldwide. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3

All good things must come to an end, as is the case with The Super Mario Bros. Movie sitting atop the widest release list, but more importantly at the box office. Since its debut on April 7, Mario and friends have collected just short of a half billion dollars domestically, while enjoying a worldwide total of over $1 billion. There is still ample opportunity however to see Super Mario on the big screen as the film is still widely available in 3,909 cinemas. This week attention turns to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 though, as it becomes the widest release, starting in 4,450 locations. More...

Theater counts: Super Mario still on a roll as the widest release of the week

Super Mario Bros. The Movie

No other film released in the past few weeks has been able to slow down Mario and friends as the legendary video game characters once again top the list of widest releases this week, and still the only movie to be showing in over 4,000 cinemas—in 4,204 of them to be exact. The film has racked up just over $447 million in domestic earnings at latest count. Next week will end Mario’s reign at the top with the opening of the most recent Guardians of the Galaxy feature, but this week the animated juggernaut will enjoy one last week as the most widely-available film in North America. Theater counts: Quantumania opens in an ultra-wide 4,345 theaters

February 16th, 2023

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

The wait is over for fans of Ant-Man as the follow-up has finally made its way into theaters—4,345 of them to be exact. That makes it the 40th-widest release of all time, placing itself firmly in between two other franchise sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Its forerunners, Ant-Man, and Ant-Man and the Wasp started out in 3,856 and 4,206 theaters respectively. The third and latest installment of the franchise brings back Paul Rudd as the titular character, while containing a bevy of big name talent including Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Bill Murray, among others. Holiday theater counts: three wide releases debut today, but Spider-Man remains widest

December 22nd, 2021

Spider-Man: No Way Home

As the Christmas holiday approaches, there are plenty of options for movie-goers. The only question is what to watch? Spider-Man: No Way Home opened last Friday and took nearly everyone by surprise as it posted an opening domestic weekend of $260 million, placing itself between 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War as the second-biggest opening of all time. The film is currently showing in 4,336 locations, which makes it the 30th-widest opening of all time, just behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Spider-Man: No Way Home might not be challenged at the box office, but there are still a wide array of films for every interest. More...

Weekend Wrap-Up: Guardians Matches Original’s Hold Earning $65.26 million

May 16th, 2017

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

As expected, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 crushed the competition this weekend earning more than Snatched and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’s combined openings. However, it held on better than expected down 55% to $65.26 million. The overall box office still fell by 30% from last weekend to $136 million. This is 3.8% higher than the same weekend last year. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 held on better than Captain America: Civil War did during its sophomore stint, but it was strong depth that helped 2017 win the year-over-year comparison. It didn’t win by much, so the overall lead still shrunk to 3.4% at $4.07 billion to $3.93 billion, but any lead is good news. More...

Weekend Predictions: Can the New Releases Snatch Victory Away from Guardians?

May 11th, 2017

Snatched

There are two wide releases coming out this week, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Snatched. However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will likely destroy them at the box office. The real question is whether or not the top three films this year will out-earn the three films from this weekend last year. At the beginning of the month, I thought that would happen, but now I’m not so sure. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 missed expectations last weekend and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Snatched haven’t seen their buzz grow like most new releases do. I don’t think 2017 will get crushed like it did last weekend, but I also don’t think it will end its mini-losing streak either. More...
