Awards Season - Juno Scores Hat Trick at Independent Spirit Awards

February 24th, 2008

The Independent Spirit Awards are one of the earliest to announce their nominees, but they don't hand out the hardware until almost the very end. This year the big winner was Juno with three awards, which could be followed by a couple of Oscars tonight. More...

DVD Sales - Spidey's DVD Sales not that Super

November 11th, 2007

It was a busy week for new releases but, as expected, Spider-man 3 topped the sales chart with 2.40 million units sold for $42.44 million in sales. This is substantially lower than The Transformers' first week sales, despite Spider-man 3 being the highest grossing film of the year. On the other hand, the film sold 130,000 Blu-Ray discs, which may or may not be a record for high definition releases. There are some... confusion with the numbers, so much so that there are accusations of impropriety, intentional or otherwise. More...

DVD Rentals - Spidey Finds Friendly Reception on the Rental Chart

November 11th, 2007

As it was on the sales chart, so it was on the rental chart: there were plenty of new releases, but Spider-man 3 came away on top with $9.70 million in rentals. More...

DVD Releases for October 30, 2007 - Part II

October 29th, 2007

Another massive week for releases with dozens of releases mentioned below (and in the first part). Of these numerous releases, there were several that were in contention for the DVD Pick of the Week, but I was able to narrow the selection down to just two: Spider-Man 3 - Blu-Ray Edition and Looney Tunes - Golden Collection - Volume Five. Blu-Ray finally gets on the board and scores a DVD Pick of the Week, but it won't be the last. In fact, I have a funny feeling the format will score its second award soon. More...

$10,000 Club is Shallow this Week

Two Tops on Per Theater Chart

August 14th, 2007

2 Days in Paris was number one on the per theater chart with an average of $17,364 in its 10 theaters. This suggests a strong possibility it will expand and it should earn at least some measure of mainstream success. The overall box office leader, Rush Hour 3, was the only other film to top $10,000 as it grabbed an average of $12,996. More...

Ultimatum Alone on Top of the Per Theater Chart

August 7th, 2007

The Bourne Ultimatum was the only film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, earning an impressive $18,930, which was close to double its nearest competition. But, while there was only one member of the $10,000 club, a few films came very close, including Becoming Jane with $9,721, which is even more impressive with a theater count of 100. It is also more than enough to guarantee expansion. More...

No End on the Per Theater Chart

July 31st, 2007

Transformation: The Life & Legacy of Werner Erhard surprised on top of the per theater chart with an impressive $25,460 earned in its lone theater. The overall box office leader, The Simpsons Movie, was in second place with $18,877 while This is England was close behind with $18,430. The political documentary, No End in Sight opened very strongly with more than $30,000 in 2 theaters for an average of $15,767. Finally, The Devil Came on Horseback also topped $10,000 with $11,143 over the weekend and $18,336 since Wednesday. More...

Phoenix Flies to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

July 17th, 2007

The overall box office leader, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was also the leader on the per theater chart with an impressive $17,995 in over 4,000 theaters. My Best Friend was reasonably close behind with an average of $15,082 in three theaters. Meanwhile, Talk to Me exploded on the scene with more than $400,000 in 33 theaters for an average of $12,182. This should be more than enough to earn some mainstream success. Speaking of mainstream success, Rescue Dawn just missed the $10,000 club this week despite growing from 6 theaters to 38 and maintained an average of $9,555. More...

Movie Website Updates for July 8 - July 14, 2007

July 14th, 2007

One of the last summer blockbusters launched its full site this week. This means two things, The Bourne Ultimatum - Official Site is the clear winner of the weekly website award. And secondly, there will likely be a slowdown in top-notch sites as we approach the dog days of summer, and the even worse days of September. More...

No Shortcut for the Limited releases

2007 Preview: July

July 1st, 2007

After a record-breaking start, the summer has slowed down considerably. Granted, it is still hot with a number of big, big blockbusters coming out. In fact, every week in July there's at least one potential $100 million movie. But that's nothing compared to what we saw in May when we have three films open with $100 million. Even worse, outside the four main releases, none of the counter-programming releases look like they will become hits and that will hurt the overall box office. More...
