Synopsis

A notorious group of criminals baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leaving no evidence behind and laying low between heists. But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, the crew may find their plans interrupted by a hardened detective who is hell-bent on solving the case.

Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

DVD Sales: New Release Takes Top Spot

February 1st, 2011

Takers led a list of four new releases that reached the top 30 on this week's sales chart. It won the race with relative ease selling 714,000 units and generating $11.42 million in opening week consumer spending at retail. The Social Network was pushed into second place with 469,000 units for the week and 1.51 million units after two. Its total sales of $19.57 million are a little on the low end, but with its performance during Awards Season heating up, it could last on the chart for a long time. Speaking of which, Despicable Me remained in third place, again, with 253,000 units / $5.09 million for the week giving it totals of 6.74 million units / $117.10 million after six weeks of release. Death Race 2 opened in fourth place with 218,000 / $4.04 million, which is good for this type of release. More...

It's a very slow week on the home market with Takers being the biggest first-run release. Admittedly, it did perform better than expected at the box office, but was still only a midlevel hit. The best bet in terms of new releases is Buried, which is coming out on a Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, but without a DVD only option. However, while that movie is amazing, there are not enough extras to be considered pick of the week material. For that honor we have to go to Futurama: Volume Five, even though it didn't come out this week, or even this year. Resident Evil is Good, Holdovers are Not

Resident Evil: Afterlife nearly matched expectations during its opening weekend, but it was the only bright spot on the box office chart and overall the box office plummeted to just $82 million. That's 23% lower than last weekend and 11% lower than the same weekend last year. The only good news is 2010 is still up on 2009 by nearly 4% at $7.81 billion to $7.51 billion. 2010 could still blow its lead if the box office remains as weak as it was over the weekend, but that seems like a longshot. Weekend Estimates: Resident Evil Dominates Slow Weekend

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D dominated a tepid weekend at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The movie's $27.7 million estimated opening will be a franchise record (see Resident Evil franchise history), although its $4 million increase from the opening of 2007's Extinction is basically accounted for by ticket price inflation. New Releases were Hardly Working

There was some good news and some bad news this weekend. On the one hand, none of the new releases were able to live up to expectations, which resulted in a 6% drop-off from last weekend to $106 million. On the other hand, that was over 7% more than the same weekend last year. Throw in Monday's numbers and Labor Day 2010 earned $133 million, 6% ahead of 2009. Labor Day long weekend is the official end of summer vacation, although the summer blockbuster season has been over for a couple weeks now. Not Quite the Last Weekend of Summer

The last weekend of summer is actually the Labor Day long weekend, which is next weekend. So that makes this weekend the penultimate weekend of summer, which is one of the worst weekends of the year to open a film. DVD Sales: New Release Takes Top Spot

February 1st, 2011

Takers led a list of four new releases that reached the top 30 on this week's sales chart. It won the race with relative ease selling 714,000 units and generating $11.42 million in opening week consumer spending at retail. The Social Network was pushed into second place with 469,000 units for the week and 1.51 million units after two. Its total sales of $19.57 million are a little on the low end, but with its performance during Awards Season heating up, it could last on the chart for a long time. Speaking of which, Despicable Me remained in third place, again, with 253,000 units / $5.09 million for the week giving it totals of 6.74 million units / $117.10 million after six weeks of release. Death Race 2 opened in fourth place with 218,000 / $4.04 million, which is good for this type of release. More...

It's a very slow week on the home market with Takers being the biggest first-run release. Admittedly, it did perform better than expected at the box office, but was still only a midlevel hit. The best bet in terms of new releases is Buried, which is coming out on a Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, but without a DVD only option. However, while that movie is amazing, there are not enough extras to be considered pick of the week material. For that honor we have to go to Futurama: Volume Five, even though it didn't come out this week, or even this year. Resident Evil is Good, Holdovers are Not

Resident Evil: Afterlife nearly matched expectations during its opening weekend, but it was the only bright spot on the box office chart and overall the box office plummeted to just $82 million. That's 23% lower than last weekend and 11% lower than the same weekend last year. The only good news is 2010 is still up on 2009 by nearly 4% at $7.81 billion to $7.51 billion. 2010 could still blow its lead if the box office remains as weak as it was over the weekend, but that seems like a longshot. Weekend Estimates: Resident Evil Dominates Slow Weekend

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D dominated a tepid weekend at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The movie's $27.7 million estimated opening will be a franchise record (see Resident Evil franchise history), although its $4 million increase from the opening of 2007's Extinction is basically accounted for by ticket price inflation. New Releases were Hardly Working

There was some good news and some bad news this weekend. On the one hand, none of the new releases were able to live up to expectations, which resulted in a 6% drop-off from last weekend to $106 million. On the other hand, that was over 7% more than the same weekend last year. Throw in Monday's numbers and Labor Day 2010 earned $133 million, 6% ahead of 2009. Will New Releases Have to Work Hard to Succeed?

Labor Day long weekend is the official end of summer vacation, although the summer blockbuster season has been over for a couple weeks now. It is arguably the worst long weekend of the year to release a film, but there are three wide releases this week hoping to buck that trend. While none really have a chance at being anything more than a mid-level hit, all three have a shot at top spot, and all three might top last year's number one new release, All About Steve. Takers Take Top Spot

There was an upset at the box office with Takers pulling out a last minute win. However, it wasn't enough for the overall box office, as that sunk 12% from last weekend to $113 million. Not Quite the Last Weekend of Summer

The last weekend of summer is actually the Labor Day long weekend, which is next weekend. So that makes this weekend the penultimate weekend of summer, which is one of the worst weekends of the year to open a film. Last year was a bit of an exception with The Final Destination opening with $27.41 million. July started out rather well, and while there was a little weakness in the end, four films surpassed $100 million, and another could join them soon. Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.
