DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 3th, 2010

August 3rd, 2010

A good week with a number of interesting releases but no real blockbusters. Kick-Ass, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Escape from New York, and Bull Durham are all coming out this week and I will get a chance to review them. ... Note the future tense. None of the screeners have arrived yet, but hopefully they all will get here soon. I am always hesitant to award the Pick of the Week to a release when the screener is late, as I prefer to take the opportunity to delve further into the DVD / Blu-ray. Fortunately, one of the prime candidates did arrive on time and Road to Perdition on Blu-ray is worthy of Pick of the Week honors. More...

DVD Releases for April 14th, 2009 - Part II

April 14th, 2009

Not a busy week on the home market with the least number of new releases on this week for a number of weeks. (It seems busier than it is, because of all of the spotlight reviews. In fact, there are as many spotlight reviews as there are simple mentions. Additionally, there are more spotlight reviews for late arrivals than there are for this week's releases.) Looking for the best of the best, there's not a lot on top worth of the DVD Pick of the Week. The release I'm looking forward to the most is Lost in Austen - Buy from Amazon, which I'm awarding the DVD Pick of the Week. Thanks to the number of spotlight reviews, this week's list had to be split into two with the second part found here. More...

Per Theater Chart takes one on The Chin

November 5th, 2008

We have a surprise upset on the per theater chart as My Name is Bruce came out of nowhere to win the race to the top with $16,432 in one theater. I don't know how well it will expand, and its reviews suggest it won't, but no matter what happens theatrically, it should be a big hit on the home market. Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom remained in second place with an average of $14,866 in five theaters. That was a greater than 50% drop-off, which is extremely high for a limited release and suggests limited potential to expand. Likewise, Synecdoche, New York fell harshly this past weekend but still added almost $100,000 in nine theaters for an average of $11,040. One last note, Let the Right One In expanded its theater count to seven and just missed the $10,000 mark with an average of $9,528. More...
