Synopsis
An epic drama spanning the years 1939 to 1952, this is the gripping story of Simon, who grows up in a loving working class family on the outskirts of Gothenburg but always feels out of place. Intellectually gifted, he stubbornly persists in acquiring an education normally reserved for young men of the professional classes, much to the chagrin of his parents who fear that he will become stuck up. He finally convinces his father to send him to an upper-class grammar school, where he meets Isak, the son of a wealthy Jewish bookseller who has fled Nazi persecution in Germany. Simon is dazzled by the books, art and music he encounters in the home of Isak’s father Ruben, which makes Simon long to know more about his own family background. Isak, on the other hand, draws comfort from learning to do something with his hands, helping Simon’s dad make boats. When Isak faces trouble at home, he is taken in by Simon’s family and the two households slowly merge, connecting in unexpected ways as war rages all over Europe.

Per Theater Chart: Going Nowhere
October 16th, 2012
There was only one film to crack the $10,000 mark on this week's Per Theater Chart. Middle Of Nowhere managed that feat with $68,000 in six theaters for an average of $11,318. Simon and the Oaks came very close with $9,963 in its one theater.

Weekend Estimates: Taken Repeats, But Argo's Close
October 14th, 2012
Taken 2 is set for a second weekend at the top of the box office charts with $22.5 million, although its 55% decline from last weekend makes it clear that the film won't have anything like the legs of its predecessor, which fell only 17% in its second outing. That will make for a tight pack of films at the top of the chart this weekend, with Argo leading the charge. Ben Affleck's film is set for $20.1 million this weekend and is showing signs of having very good word of mouth: it was up 47% from Friday to Saturday and looks likely to fall by around 35% on Sunday -- impressive figures these days. Sinister will have the rare distinction of opening at the top of the chart on Friday and finishing the weekend in third place (Lionsgate has its gross pegged at $18.25 million over three days).

Limited Releases: Smashing Success
October 12th, 2012
It's a very busy week for limited releases with a dozen films on this week's list. There are few that are earning good buzz or strong reviews, and even a couple earning both. Smashed is probably the film with the best chance at earning mainstream success. The Big Picture, Middle of Nowhere, and Gaybe are also earning overwhelmingly positive reviews.
