Synopsis
Ruben Brandt, a famous psychotherapist, is forced to steal 13 paintings from the world’s renowned museums and private collections to prevent his suffering from terrible nightmares he has as a result of subliminal messaging he received as a child. Accompanied by his four patients, he and his band of thieves strike regularly and with great success: the Louvre, Tate, Uffizi, Hermitage, the Museum of Modern Art. “The Collector” quickly becomes the most wanted criminal in the world. Gangsters and headhunters chase him around the world while the reward for his capture keeps rising, approaching a hundred million dollars. A cartel of insurance companies entrusts Mike Kowalski, a private detective and leading expert on art theft, to solve the “Collector Case.”

Home Market Releases for May 21st, 2019
May 21st, 2019
It is a very strange week on the home market. There are two $100 million hits, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Upside, a midlevel hit, Isn’t it Romantic, and then practically nothing. The week’s releases are more top-heavy than any other week I can remember. Fortunately, the biggest release of the week, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, is also one of the best wide releases of the year so far and it is easily the Pick of the Week. In fact, it would likely have won that title even if it was a busier than average week.

Theater Averages: Fighting for First Place
February 20th, 2019
Not only did we set a new yearly high market for theater average this past weekend, but two of the top three results from 2019 were from this weekend. Fighting With My Family led the way with an average of $34,695 in four theaters over the three-day weekend. The film earned just under $200,000 during its five-day debut, which is great news for its wide expansion this weekend. The re-release of War and Peace managed $22,976 in its one theater. That’s amazing, because the film is six hours long and they could only fit in 2 screenings a day. Then again, the movie is six hours long, they probably charged double to see it. Birds of Paradise was next with an average of $11,541 in two theaters. This is more impressive than it looks at first, because the film debuted on Wednesday, which undoubtedly tempered some of its weekend box office. The final film in the $10,000 club was CatVideoFest with $11,269. At first I was confused by this result, but then I found out it is a charity event, so good job everyone involved.

There are several films on this week’s list that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews, including Fighting With My Family, which expands wide next week. How wide could depend on how well it does over the weekend.

Limited and VOD Releases: Limited Releases get a Green Light
November 16th, 2018
This week is filled with films that are earning reviews that are good, but likely not quite good enough to thrive in limited release. There are a few exceptions, mostly documentaries. This leaves Green Book as the only film that has a real shot at mainstream success. In fact, given its reviews, it could earn some Awards Season success.
