Synopsis

RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale, a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather's constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik's summer appears to be a total disaster--until he meets Chazz Morningstar, a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he'd ever imagined.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 18th, 2012

December 16th, 2012

It's the last week before Christmas, which means it is the last chance for last minute gifts. There are a number of first-run releases coming out this week, some of which are not coming out till Friday, or even next Monday. There are also quite a few limited releases and TV on DVD releases hitting the home market this week. However, none of these were big hits and very few earned strong praise from critics. That doesn't mean there are none that are worth picking up. In fact, we have a trio of contenders for Pick of the Week. Shameless: The Complete Second Season on DVD or Blu-ray; Pitch Perfect on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack; and Arbitrage on DVD or Blu-ray. It was a close call, but in the end I went with Arbitrage. Also coming out this week is Rush: 2012 - CD and Blu-ray in a Deluxe Edition or Super Deluxe Edition, which is a clear winner of Puck of the Week. More...

Per Theater Chart: 2 Days 2 Strong

August 15th, 2012

2 Days in New York led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $11,971 in two theaters. This is well below its predecessor and it likely won't have the same legs either. The re-release of Max and the Junkman earned $11,264 in its lone theater. The overall number one film, The Bourne Legacy, cracked the $10,000 club with an average of $10,185. Red Hook Summer was right behind with an average of $10,018 in four theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Bourne and Campaign Knock Out Batman

August 12th, 2012

After another lengthy run for the country's number one film, we will have a new top movie this weekend thanks to a strong debut for The Bourne Legacy, which will beat The Dark Knight Rises after Batman spent three weekends atop the chart. Universal is predicting that their franchise reboot will pick up about $40.3 million this weekend, somewhat behind The Bourne Legacy's $69.2 million debut, but very creditable for movie that takes the franchise in a new direction. Even better for the overall market, The Campaign is predicted to post $27.4 million for Warner Bros., which will be enough for second place. More...

Two Days of Limited Releases

August 10th, 2012

It is a pretty busy week for limited releases, but not a good week. There are several films earning good reviews, but only one of them is earning great reviews. That film is The Green Wave, but its box office chances are limited, because political documentaries rarely find large audiences, especially when the subject matter isn't connected to most audiences here. I'm most interested in Cosmopolis, but while it debuts in Vancouver tonight, Americans will have to wait a week to see it. On the other end of the scale, there are not as many films earning 80% positive films as there are films earning less than 20% positive reviews. On a side note, one of the best-reviewed release this week is Total Recall, which is coming out at the Film Forum tonight. More...
