Weekend projections: Songbirds & Snakes headed for respectable mid-40s on debut
November 19th, 2023
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is headed for a very respectable $44-million debut, according to Lionsgate’s Sunday-morning projection. While substantially less than the amount earned by the other films in the franchise, all of which started out with over $100 million, it’s right in line with our Friday-morning prediction, and sets the movie up for a good run, at least over the coming Thanksgiving week. With another $54.5 million projected internationally, we’re looking at a worldwide opening just shy of $100 million.

Weekend predictions: Songbirds & Snakes looking for mid-40s weekend
November 17th, 2023
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes will land with an opening weekend somewhere in the mid-$40-millions, according to our model’s Friday run. While that’s well short of the debuts of previous films in the franchise, it’s a respectable number, and it’ll look very respectable if the final number comes in ahead of the $46.1 million earned by The Marvels last weekend. Technically, there’s a lot of competition from new releases this weekend, but those films neatly manage to avoid competing with one another, so in reality this could be a weekend when four new movies thrive.

Weekend predictions: The Marvels will struggle to get to $50 million
November 10th, 2023
Things don’t look good for The Marvels going into this weekend. After lukewarm (and sometimes hostile) buzz leading up to the release of the film, ticket pre-sales have been disappointing, and its Thursday preview numbers were a downright awful $6.6 million. That’s the worst preview number for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since Ant-Man back in 2015. That film went on to earn $57.2 million over its opening weekend. With sequels tending to be more front-loaded, it looks like The Marvels will struggle to reach $50 million this weekend.
