Synopsis
Maggie Hardin is a vibrant and practical thirty-something New Yorker working at the New School who, without success in finding love, decides now is the time to have a child on her own. But when she meets John Harding, a “ficto-critical anthropologist” and struggling novelist, Maggie falls in love for the first time, and adjusts her plans for motherhood. Complicating matters, John is in a strained marriage with Georgette Nørgaard, a brilliant Danish academic. With a Greek chorus of Maggie’s eccentric and hilarious best friends Tony and Felicia observing wryly from the sidelines, Maggie sets into motion a new plan that catapults her into a nervy love triangle with John and Georgette; intertwining their lives and connecting them in surprising and the humorous new ways. Maggie learns that sometimes destiny should be left to its own devices.

Home Market Releases for August 23rd, 2016
August 24th, 2016
There are not many major hits on this week’s list, but there are several releases that are contenders for Pick of the Week. This includes TV on DVD releases like Ash vs The Evil Dead: Season 1 (DVD or Blu-ray), as well as limited releases like Maggie’s Plan (DVD or Blu-ray). However, in the end I went with The Nice Guys on Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Theater Averages: Café Tops Yearly Chart with an Average of $71,858
July 19th, 2016
Café Society earned first place on the theater average chart with an average of $71,858 in five theaters over the weekend. This is not only the best of the weekend, it is the best of the year so far, topping the previous champ, Captain America: Civil War, which had an average of $42,390 during its opening weekend. Second place went to Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party with an average of $24,938; however, while this is a great result for a documentary, digging just a little into the film’s numbers reveals major weaknesses. The film fell 50% from Friday to Saturday. That’s devastating. We will see if this is an anomaly or a portent when we get this coming weekend’s results. Ghostbusters and The Secret Life of Pets were neck-and-neck with averages of $11,612 and $11,604 respectively.

Theater Averages: Conjuring Comes Out on Top, but De Palma is De Lightful
June 15th, 2016
There were only two films in the $10,000 club on the theater average chart. This includes the overall number one film, The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, which opened with an average of $12,087. The only other film in the $10,000 club was De Palma, which earned an average of $10,118 in three theaters.

Theater Averages: Weiner Wins Weekend Race with $16,835
May 25th, 2016
Weiner earned first place on the theater average chart, which is terrible news for me, because there are so many immature puns that I want to be using right now. The film earned an average of $16,835 in five theaters, which is fantastic for a documentary. The Lobster was right behind with an average of $16,212 in 24 theaters during its second week of release. The film has already hit $1 million in total and has plenty of room to grow. Maggie's Plan was next with an average of $12,662 in five theaters. It has a shot at expanding significantly, but it likely won't expand truly wide. Love and Friendship remained in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,911. Its better than expected theatrical run appears to have pushed back its VOD release.

Weekend Estimates: Angry Birds Win Civil War with $39 Million Debut
May 22nd, 2016
The Angry Birds Movie is performing at the top end of expectations this weekend, and will top the box office chart with a commendable $39 million. While that’s a long way behind the $75.1 million earned by Zootopia on its opening weekend back in March, it’s a very respectable figure, and gives Sony the increasingly-rare bragging rights over Disney this weekend, with Captain America: Civil War dropping to second place with $33.1 million.

Limited and VOD Releases: Plan to see a Limited Release
May 20th, 2016
It's a slow week for limited releases with the total films on this week's list in the single-digits. Of these, only Maggie's Plan is likely going to be a hit in theaters. There are a few others that could do well on the home market.
