DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 14th, 2012

August 14th, 2012

It is an amazing week on the home market, almost. One of the biggest films of all time comes out on DVD and Blu-ray this week; however, fans of The Hunger Games will have to wait till a minute after midnight on Saturday morning to get a hold of the film. I hope my screener will arrive before then. As for releases coming out this Tuesday, there are some that should sell well, but for Pick of the Week, I think Jaws' Blu-ray debut it a top contender. The Hunger Games is also a contender for Pick of the Week. I'm going with Jaws, but it is a close race. More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: Kill List

August 13th, 2012

I heard a bit of buzz about Kill List before it opened in limited release, at least compared to most films. However, while its reviews were very good, they evidently were not good enough, because the film opened on the soft side and collapsed the next weekend. Was it really not good enough to thrive? Or is it just the wrong genre for limited release and should find a more receptive audience on the home market? More...

Per Theater Chart: Truth Stalls but Squeaks Out Win

February 8th, 2012

An Inconsistent Truth repeated on top of the per theater chart with $12,176 in one theater. However, while it won, it fell more than 40%, which is closer to a wide release than a limited release. W.E. was very close behind with an average of $11,769 in four theaters. More...

Keeping Up with Limited Releases

February 3rd, 2012

Talk of Oscars is still dominating art house aficionados, so it comes as no surprise that the list of limited releases is not particularly strong this weekend. That's not to say there are no films worthy of watching, but it is unlikely any of them will be major hits. There are a few noteworthy releases, including W.E., Madonna's attempt at winning an Oscar. It won't. The Innkeepers is the widest release of the week and it is also earning good reviews. However, its the wrong genre for limited release. And finally, there's Moon Point, a Canadian film opening in Toronto. There are Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and cast for the evening shows over the weekend as an added bonus. More...
