Synopsis

Grace and Edward, married for 29 years, live in a small seaside town near a cove under the cliffs called Hope Gap. When their son Jamie comes to visit for the weekend, Edward informs him that he plans to leave Grace, that same day. HOPE GAP tracks the unravelling of three lives, through stages of shock, disbelief and anger, to a resolution of sorts. There are no villains; only good people who’ve lived too long with old mistakes and are now paying the price. There are no easy answers, and no simple paths to redemption. A husband, a wife,a son are forced to face hard truths, and out of those truths to fashion new lives.

VOD Releases: There’s a Large Gap Between Quality and Quantity

July 8th, 2020

Sometimes Always Never

There are a ton of new releases on VOD this week. Unfortunately, most are rather weak and almost none are going to find a significant audience. The War of the Worlds is the best release, but the Criterion Collection Blu-ray is the better deal. On the other hand, Sometimes Always Never is perfect for VOD, but you have to wait until Friday to get it. More...

New on Disc: Trolls Tower Above the Competition

July 7th, 2020

The War of the Worlds

Trolls World Tour is coming out on physical media this week, on all four major formats: DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, and 4K Ultra HD. However, while it is easily the biggest release of the week, it isn’t the best. There are two contenders for Pick of the Week, Murdoch Mysteries: Season 13 and The War of the Worlds: Criterion Collection. The War of the Worlds is the Pick of the Week, but Murdoch Mysteries does get the rarely-awarded Puck of the Week, for Best Canadian Release. More...

Theater Averages: First Cow Comes Home

March 12th, 2020

First Cow

First Cow was one of two films in the $10,000 club earning an average of $20,331 in four theaters. The Booksellers was the only other member of the $10,000 club opening with $15,794 in its lone theater. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Bitter Pill to Swallow

March 6th, 2020

Swallow

There are way too many limited releases and I fear this will hurt the box office chances of any film coming out this week. This is too bad, as there are several that deserve to find an audience, including Bacurau, Extra Ordinary, First Cow, Go Back to China, and so many more. It’s going to be tough when none of the films open in the $10,000 club. More...
