There were more than half a dozen new releases to chart this week, including to top two sellers, although none of them were particularly strong sellers. P.S., I Love You led the way with sales of $11.88 million from 743,000 units while First Sunday placed second with 468,000 units sold and opening week revenue of $7.94 million.

A slow week for top-of-the-line releases and there are no first-run, wide releases that look even remotely interesting enough to buy. There are a few limited releases and older releases to fill the gap. It was also a slow week for spotlight reviews, but that gave me a chance to completely catch up to all the screeners that arrived late. ... That is until the next batch of late arrivals show up. As for the best of the best, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Buy from Amazon is high on that list, except technically it was released a couple of weeks ago. Teeth - Buy from Amazon also impressed, but the extras are a little too light. For the DVD Pick of the Week, I'm going with The Passion of Greg the Bunny: Best of the Film Parodies - Volume 2.

Records fell this week as Cloverfield became the biggest film ever to debut on Martin Luther King long weekend, as well as setting a few other records (including topping Star Wars long standing January opening record).
This helped the weekend bring in $155 million over three days, which was 19% more than last weekend.
It was also 56% more than the same weekend last year.
However, since Martin Luther King long weekend was a week earlier that isn't a fair comparison.
Compared to last year's Martin Luther King long weekend, 2008 was ahead by 21% over three days and 19% over four.

A 2008 release finally looks like it will win a weekend. The first two weeks of the year have brought us wins by holdovers, but the super-hyped Cloverfield should end that streak. Or it could turn into another Snakes on a Plane, I'm still not sure which way it will go.

It's the second weekend of January and we still haven't seen a January release top the charts.
This time the biggest hit was a wide expansion from December, which not only finished first, but also helped the overall box office reach $130 million.
This is about 7% lower than last weekend, but roughly 1% more than the same weekend last year, and this weekend last year was Martin Luther King Weekend, which helped boost the numbers.

If this was an election and we were CNN, we'd probably still be calling this weekend's box office race "too close to call".
With weekend estimates in, The Bucket List heads the list with an estimated $19.54 million.
That's just half a million or so ahead of First Sunday with $19 million, and final numbers could yet see the two positions reversed.

We have twice as many sites as last week, but the real improvement is with the quality at the top. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movies - Official Site - has an excellent mix of regular features, extras, and style and is the clear winner of the Weekly Website Award.

This week, we have three new wide release and there are also a couple of expansions.
Add in several strong holdovers, and there could be quite a logjam on the top of the charts.
Not every new release / wide expansion will take part in this bounty, with In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, which could turn out to be the worst movie of the year, likely to miss out.

It's the beginning of a new month, and a new year. This new beginning brings with it a sense of hope and exhilaration for many people, but this does not extend into the movie world. January is dominated by films from last year. Not only are holdovers going to overwhelm new releases at the box office for the next couple weeks, but with the award season heating up, most buzz is about who will win what. In fact, only Cloverfield seems to be able to rise above the award season buzz, but this is not a sure sign that the film will survive at the box office.
