Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

Contest: The Other Prizes

July 30th, 2010

August begins with only one saturation level release, The Other Guys, which should lead the way at the box office and is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for The Other Guys. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Brooklyn's Finest on Blu-ray. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Brooklyn's Finest on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Sales: Putting a Bounty on Top Spot

July 27th, 2010

Sales numbers continued to be soft this week with none of the new releases doing strong business. We did have a new number of seller, as The Bounty Hunter opened with 560,000 units and $9.71 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD Sales: Not the Finest Week on the Home Market

July 20th, 2010

It has been a full month since we had any real activity on the sales chart, and this is starting to take its toll on the overall numbers. New releases were almost nonexistent at the box office, but one of them, Brooklyn's Finest, still managed to top the sales chart this week, albeit with just 297,000 units sold and $4.63 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 6th, 2010

July 4th, 2010

It's a terrible week for home market releases, at least in terms of potential sales. How bad is it? As I'm writing this, the best selling release on Amazon.com is The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo on DVD. That's not to say it is a bad movie; in fact, it is the Pick of the Week, but it is a foreign language limited release, and those are not exactly known for topping the charts. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo is the Pick of the Week, but while the DVD is selling better according to Amazon.com, the Blu-ray is the better deal. More...

Audiences Stay Mad over Alice

March 16th, 2010

The box office results were mostly fantastic over the weekend, thanks almost entirely to one film, Alice in Wonderland. The movie was able to hold on better than almost everyone predicted, but the rest of the new releases failed to connect. This resulted in a 26% drop from last weekend, as the overall market pulled in $147 million. However, this was 45% higher than the same weekend last year. Meanwhile, year-to-date 2010 has now pulled in $2.24 billion, which is nearly 9.0% higher than last year's pace. More...

Alice Shatters Records, Turns 2010 Around

March 8th, 2010

Wow. There's no other word to describe it. Alice in Wonderland's record-breaking opening blew away all expectations and by itself was almost as much as the entire weekend box office last weekend and last year. Overall, the box office pulled in $197 million, which was 65% higher than last weekend and 69% higher than the same weekend last year. It pushed the year-to-date box office to $2.04 billion, which is 5.9% higher than last year's record-setting pace. Additionally, attendance is also above last year's pace by close to 4%. More...

Weekend Estimates: Alice in Box Office Wonderland

March 7th, 2010

Alice in Wonderland blasted into the record books with a huge $116.3 million opening weekend, according to Disney's Sunday estimate. Among other notable records, it's on track to break the record for the biggest weekend by a non-sequel (overtaking Spider-Man). It's also the biggest weekend in the first quarter of the third, and only the third movie to top $100 million outside of the Summer season. The combination of 3D and Tim Burton couldn't have been better timed for Disney. More...

Alice's Expectations are Wonderful

March 4th, 2010

It is the beginning of a new month and there's lots of pressure on the box office to keep up pace with last year. There was only one wide release this time last year, Watchmen, but it opened with more than $55 million, which at the time was the third best March opening ever. This time around Alice in Wonderland is expecting to top that figure. In fact, a lot think it will set the March opening record. More...

2010 Preview: March

March 1st, 2010

February was a stronger than expected month, for the most part, but 2010 continued to lose ground to 2009. Hopefully this trend will reverse itself, but it could be tough. Last March started with Watchmen, which earned just over $100 million at the box office. The month ended with Monsters vs. Aliens, which earned nearly $200 million. Granted, between these two releases there were a fair number of bombs, but it might be hard for this year to match last year at the top. More...

More...
