Key Openings for Skeleton
August 28th, 2005
The Skeleton Key opened in 10- more markets over the weekend and in now playing on 1400 screens, however, it still hasn't found the success the studio was hoping for. It did open in first place in Germany, but it still had a very soft opening with $1.6 million. It also opened in first place in Russia with $625,000 over the weekend and $780,000 since Thursday, but in Australia and New Zealand it had to settle for a distant second place with $760,000 and $110,000 respectively. The Skeleton Key also open in Austria with $230,000 for the week, but its placing is unknown at the moment. Add in holdovers in France, ($250,000 for $2.2 million) and the U.K., ($130,000 for $4.5 million) and you have roughly $4 million for the weekend and $16.5 million so far. July 16th, 2005
It looks like the home market is starting to recover from its extended slump as Hide & Seek was the number one with $11.71 million in combined rentals, $10.55 million from DVDs and $1.16 million from VHS. The film was also the number one selling DVD this week, but no figures were released. More...DVD Releases for July 5, 2005
July 4th, 2005
Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases, classics and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. Usually the first week of the month is the busiest, but not this month. However, just because it's a slow week doesn't mean there isn't a well deserving film for the DVD pick of the week, namely Bride and Prejudice - Buy from Amazon. More...The Largest Yard
June 12th, 2005
The Longest Yard opened in second place in Australia with $2.5 million. On the other hand, the film could only manage $750,000 on 260 screens in Mexico, not surprising since Adam Sandler has never been a big draw internationally, especially outside English speaking markets. More...Late Figures Change Top Five
June 5th, 2005
It was a slightly busier weekend as several studios were brave enough, or foolhardy enough to try and sandwich their film between the worldwide release of Revenge of the Sith and Batman Begins, which debuts in just 10 days. With War of the Worlds' worldwide release just two weeks after that, there's very little room for smaller films to survive. More...International: Constantine Continues to Climb
May 1st, 2005
It was a good news, bad news kind of weekend for Constantine. The film remained in top spot in Japan with $2,330,027 on 349 screens for a $9,011,671 running tally in the market. Bad news, it dropped 37% during its second weekend in the market, which is really steep for Japan. Overall the film brought in $3 million on 1,200 screens in 40 markets for a international box office of $136.4 million. More...Hitch still Connecting with Moviegoers
April 24th, 2005
Hitch is just coasting on holdovers now, and will be until it opens in Japan at the beginning of June. This week it added $5.1 million from 3000 screens in 55 markets to its already impressive $170.4 million international total and with soft week to week drop-offs and a good showing in Japan and it will have a $200 million future. This week the film added $643,359 in its fifth weekend in France for a $12,785,670 total in the market, $110,000 in its second weekend in Argentina, (rising to first place in the meantime) as well as other, smaller markets. March 29th, 2005
The Ballad of Jack and Rose topped the per theater charts by earning just shy of $60,000 in its 5 theaters, for an average of $14,865.
And while it was the only film to hit $10,000, Mondovino came close with $9,840 over the weekend and $13,060 since it opened on Thursday, all in one theater.

Tie at the Top of Per Theater Chart
March 22nd, 2005
There was a tie this weekend atop the Per Theater Chart between Melinda and Melinda, both of which were directed by the team of Woody and Allen. Melinda and Melinda earned an amazing $74,238 in its lone theater, which is the best per theater average ever for a Fox Searchlight film over a three-day weekend.

Anger Sees a lot of Upside
March 15th, 2005
As expected, both Millions and The Upside of Anger made it to the $10,000 club.
However, they finished in the opposite order than expected. The Upside of Anger topped the charts with $211,559 in 9 theatres for an impressive average of $23,507.
That bodes well for this weekend, when it expands into more than 100 theaters, and the weekend after when it goes wide. Millions, on the other hand, opened a little lower than expected but still very strong, with an average of $14,045 in just 5 theaters.
The last film in the $10,000 club was Best of Youth, which saw its weekend haul climb by 37.85% to $10,325 in its loan theater.
That's even more impressive when you take into account its 6 hour runtime.

Close Race on Per Theater Charts, But Both Films Fall Short
March 8th, 2005
No film was able to reach the $10,000 club on the per theater charts this week, but at least two films were close. Leading the way was the overall box office leader, The Pacifier, which opened with an average of $9,758.
In second place with $9,020 was last week's winner, Downfall.

The Aviator Soars Higher than Before
March 6th, 2005
The Aviator beat weekend estimates by a substantial margin leading to a $5.9 million box office on 3000 screens in 34 markets. The multi-Oscar winning movie has hit $86.2 million internationally and will cross $200 million worldwide before too long. The film dropped a spot to fifth place in South Korea with $834,660 for the week and slipped to second in Australia with $798,000. The only market the film opened it was Argentina, where it easily took top spot with $232,000. More...Down Stays Up on Per Theater Charts
March 1st, 2005
Last week's winner remained the per theater chart champion, as Downfall earned and average of $15,704.
That's down just 13.7%, despite it being a post holiday weekend and seeing its theater count quadruple; this bodes very well for the film's long-term success.
The only other film to crack the top 10 was overall box office champ, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which averaged $14,771 in its 1,483 theaters.

Twelve Tops the Best of the Rest
February 27th, 2005
Ocean's Twelve may have dropped out of the top five, but it is still going strong with $4.5 million on 1400 screens in 35 markets for an international box office of $225.8 million so far. No new openings means the heist film had to rely on holdovers likes its $2.5 million during its third weekend in the U.K. and $1.4 million during its fifth week of release in Japan, finishing second in both those markets. More...Per Theater Charts Fall Down
February 23rd, 2005
Only two films were able to crack the $10,000 club this week, at least if you only count the three day weekend.
The charts were led by the German Oscar contender, Downfall, which opened in only one theater and earned $18,195 over the 3-day weekend, and $24,220 if you add in the holiday Monday.
In second place was Bride and Prejudice with a per theater average of $10,047 / $12,015.

Re-Release Leads Close Race
February 15th, 2005
The re-release of Masculine Feminine took top spot on the per theater charts, with an average of $13,428 in two theaters.
This is the second time in three weeks that a re-release has managed that feat.
There was an extremely close battle for second place between the overall box office champ, Hitch and Bride and Prejudice, which earned averages of $12,068 and $12,058 respectively.
Had the latter film sold just 50 more tickets it would have finished in second place.

Real Fight Between Limited Releases This Week
February 11th, 2005
To be totally frank, most weeks you would be hard pressed to find any movie in the limited release sections that will make any impact on the box office.
This week, on the other hand, we have two that should score mainstream success.
Normally this would drive me nuts; it's hard enough for a limited release to find mainstream success, and now these two films have the added pressure of competing against each other.
However, their target audiences couldn't be more different, (although odds are I'll pick them both up when they hit DVD.)

October 27th, 2004
Despite a 45% drop in its weekend haul, Shark Tale was able easily able to earn it third first place finish on the international charts. Still early in its run, the film took home $16.2 million in 4,368 theatres in 24 markets pushing its total to $80.3 million internationally. Without any openings the film relied on strong holdovers like in the U.K. where it drop 39%, in France it was off 32% and 35% in Germany. More...Sharks do a Double-Take
October 20th, 2004
Thanks to mostly unopposed openings several more markets, Shark Tale was able to repeat as the international box office champ this week. Not only that, but its $29.6 million more than doubled its international tally prior to the start of the weekend as the film now sits at $56.2 million. The best opening of the weekend, and most likely of its international run, was in the U.K. where the film managed to take in $9.1 million, ($13.6 million if you include last week's previews.) In France the result was strong with $4.2 million but in the face of local competition, it could only manage $3.4 million in Germany. More...Shark Attack
October 13th, 2004
With openings in nearly a dozen new markets, Shark Tale was able to take top spot on the international charts with $9.4 million in 16 markets, pushing its early total to $19.2 million internationally and over $100 million worldwide. Highlights include $4.4 million in the U.K., (including previews) and $2.05 million in Mexico. How happy the studio is with these results depends on their expectations. Compared to the average film, Shark Tale is a massive hit. But compared to Dreamworks previous digitally animated film, Shrek 2, it is a large drop.
